I have just recently aquired an e39 530i Sport Auto, Year 2000, and have come accross quite a loud knocking sound which is generated every time I go over any bumps in the road or speed humps.  My previous experience has told me that it is the anti-roll bar link arms but I have always had them go at the back.  I would appreciate some enlightenment.

Above is the link that shows how to change the anti-roll link, good advice but not as straight forward as they say it is.

Knocking sound suggests the links are gone happened to me 3 years ago and had them replaced at the place where I got the car but they did not use BMW parts and they are going / gone again. One side last October when I replaced it with a BMW link but bad weather and illness forced me to leave the other side which was ok until now. Other side now going the same way but with me it has been more of a creaking noise which I beleive happens when dirt etc gets under the rubber.

Hope this is of help

could be the thrust arm bushes on the front lower control arms

What is mileage, etc?

I had to have a 'hedgehog' resistor changed in order for my climate control to work properly and stop the eratic behaviour.  The specialist who did this work informed me that my front driver's side radius arm was worn as were my rear ball joints.  I think that he means the track control arm.

My car has done 93,000 miles.

Very good deduction, my dear Toxic, it was exactly that.  OSR lower track control arm, worn bush, causing a fair bit of play.  Having it replaced today.

Thanks for your response and diagnosis.
