Subject: MG Club run Sunday 3rd April
Date Posted: 28-March-2005 at 11:07

This has been mentioned at the club meets but for anyone who’s missed hearing about it here’s the gist.

The MG Owners Club is having a run from Durham down to Helmsley (on the A170 Thirsk to Scarborough road) for lunch followed by a trip on to Whitby to have Fish ‘n’ Chips for tea.

It's quite an informal affair and anyone who wants to go can just meet at the Durham services off the A1 at Bowburn (Junction 61).

Route instructions will be provided and they’re asking people to be there between 9.00am and 9.30, hopefully getting away by 9.45am.

I’ve been on one of their runs before & it was a good day out. I’ll be attending with my trusty Six & there’s a couple of E46 Threes going too.  It would be nice to see a better representation of BMWs past & present ie. Chris with his 325 Sport if he’s got the grass out of it’s undercarriage & maybe a Baur or M3 Evo, Mick ??

Andy,

Don't think I am doing anything on Sunday so I will join you. No excuse really as the start is only 10 mins from me!!

Hopefully the weather will be better than Sunday at York.

I can meet up in Helmsley as its only up the road from York (nice little run in itself, have friends in Nawton/Beadlam). Whitby is nice, best chippy is Hadleys, just over the bridge (have a Wetherby whaler near me in York, and don't reckon much to 'em - based in Whitby apparently).
Anyone else want to meet in Helmsley, and what time do you reckon to arrive (main square where all the bikers hang out I guess)?

Don't know if I can make this Andy. The Baur's poorly at the minute - blew the bottom hose at the weekend - it looks very original, wouldn't you think that it would last more than 21 years?

They just don't make 'em like they used to.  Slap some gaffer tape on & you'll be ok.

I'm hoping to get some advance route guides which will give me some idea of where we'll be & when.

I'll better check the hoses on the Six .  .  .

I know I'm not meant to cross post (sorry Nigel) but:

++ STOP PRESS ++ STOP PRESS ++ STOP PRESS ++

Is it too late for me to potentially join the Sunday run?

I need to check it out with the wife first (I'd be on my own) but I have managed to get well ahead of my work today and if she has nothing planned then I think it might be a go for me.

Whats the start/middle/end run/route plan and all?

The only thing for me would probably be I'd have to be back up here for no later than 5pm because of the little one (I like to at least spend a few hours with her before she goes to bed).

Just love the 1st part of that route to Yarm, that is my stamping ground, can 1 go 1st
only thing to take easy is the crossing of the A66,should be O.K on a Sunday, but both the slip road off/and back on (to turn right) to Longnewton are "Short" and close together, just make sure when you pull out on to the 66 you have a space to go straight over to the slip road on the right
AndyS did but this in bold letters, but just to let anyone Know if they do get it wrong, carry along to the 1st slip road and either double back on yourself or follow the signs to Yarm

Alas.

Sorry guys.

It's a YES.  See you on Sunday morning!!!!!

Yippee!  I'll bring a digital camera to get a few pics and post them up on here afterwards.

I should add that I haven't been to Bowburn services before so may get lost....(particularly as I still think the BMW SatNav is crap).

Who will be there from here, i.e. actually starting off from Bowburn?

Keep an eye out for me arriving because I haven't met any of you before and I don't want a bunch of MG owners wondering who the strange bloke in the yellow M3 is and just ignoring me!

That's a ****** because first thing this morning it said Sun only and up to 19 degrees.

Weather forecasters, ****** useless.

You watch, it'll persistently(!) rain without doubt.

Newsflash !

Thought this was organised by the MG owners club but see below:-

"Hello and welcome to the first club run organised by Durham Thoroughbred Wheels.  The club was formed in 2004 to allow people in the area with a wide variety of vehicles to join in events together, rather than be separated just because of their choice of vehicle.  Everyone is welcome at our events as long as you drive something a bit different from the norm, if you check out the club website (www.dtw.cjb.net) you will get some idea of what we mean!

We hope you enjoy the day as there are a variety of roads included and some interesting villages and towns on the route. The route is timed to get you to Helmsley for lunchtime and there are a number of places to eat if you want, or picnic areas next to the castle if you have brought your own.  Feel free to stop wherever you want as the whole idea is for a relaxed day to do as you please before eventually ending up in Whitby.

If you are interested in attending any of our future events keep an eye on the website and contact our webwomble if you need to give details (these will be needed for some car shows where numbers are required in advance)."

The guy organising the event is an MG club member too (& a Triumph bike owner too - a real petrolhead).  Expect he'll bring his blue MGB GT - watch out! its got a semi competition V8 in it

Hopefully we can get a few outings this year with them.

I've checked that site out and other than a few new MG ZR/S/T's all seems not too bad....

They do actually say that they draw the line at anything "Max Power-ish" at which point they may start to laugh.  Phew.

How long do you think it'll take to get from say Gosforth to Bowburn Services?

Well I'll be on my own and I've just ran it through Autoroute using what are fairly typical speeds based on my past journeys and it reckons 26 minutes.

I'm aiming to get there for about 9.30am - so see you all then.

I'll be on my own because the other half is taking the kids out (it'd be a bit too much of a day for them to be in the car that length of time).

However, can't see any problems with other halves coming, the more the merrier I'd have thoughr.

Yeah, I just got back and I must say I really enjoyed it, pity you couldn't have come to Whitby Grahame and Mark, the route to Whitby was great. We had a trusty big red 6series(Andy) to follow

Great stuff, when's the next one

Big round of applause for all involved, because I really enjoyed today and the weather was certainly in our favour!

I got in at 5.10pm which was very good considering Cliff and I were living Whitby around 3.20pm and hit some fairly slow traffic en-route to Loftus.  I won't say what my top speed was on the Parkway...

I'm going to post a series of photo's shortly but can I please ask something of anyone else that publishes pictures...

PLEASE BLANK THE NUMBER PLATES OUT

I know someone who became victim of theft due to their number plates being on a public web site, allowing a professional team from out of the area to track the car they wanted down, find it's address, and hey presto - car gone.

So please use MS Paint or anything you have get the plates out.

I've done it on any car featured in my pictures, just for every members security.

Superb day though - and thanks to everyone for the community spirit, the waiting for each other and the general blast that seemed to be had by all.

Can we get a day like this sorted for ourselves?  Perhaps a bit more organisation around the lunch time?  The Durham people seemed to disappear into thin air and leave us somewhat wondering what to do!

I liked their hampers, picnics, tables and deckchairs though!  I might do that next time and hopefully persuade the wife to tag along and get the kids looked after by someone!

I hope I live to be as old as some of those MG owners too....!  I'm sure I saw John Hurt driving one...

THE PICTURES!

First of all, the pre-run gathering....

An MG(!), followed by Grahame Vincent, AndyS and Baur_320 (Mick).

Liz's Baur (Neo in foregound, Liz strolling in front of her car).

In the background is an intruder Boxster (pah) and a Phoenix M3 that belongs to yours truly.

320Ci's car with Cliff's 325i Cab alongside.

Stood debating whether it was going to stay sunny or not are (left to right) Grahame, Cliff's better half (oops, forgot her name, sorry!), Cliff, 320Ci and Floody who brought the Japanese bug eyed intruder.

A wider shot of the general group (there must have been at least 20-25 other cars) showing the Trevor and a lot of MG's.

Floody's Intruder machine in the foreground, in the background are Liz's other half (sorry, forgot his name too!!!), Mick, Liz, the guy from the Durham club who dished the leaflets out and then disappeared into the ether, and AndyS talking to his better half and Mick's too.

320Ci in the foregound and Cliff's too.  They're still debating the weather by the look of it...

Eventually, after trekking over the Himalaya's and through a few muddy patches that gave us all Cardiac Arrests at the prospect of our motors getting dirty.....not to mention the Horse that tried to attack AndyS's 635 and then wanted to get into the rear of mine.....

...well, we get to Helmsley.

And as you can see, 320Ci is walking around saying "Hmmm, where did I park my car???  Hey guys, anyone seen where I left it...."

But alas, Floody has to depart as he had a childrens birthday party to get dressed up for.....good on ya mate!

Where's Grahame gone?

Well he isn't looking at the spanking clean 635Csi.  Oooh hang on, there appears to be a gathering in the background.

And Liz has found a doghair daring to blemish the finish on her Baur....that's it gone now, phew.

320Ci is in the background, still looking for his car.  In the foreground is a shiney 635 again.  Same one, seems to get everywhere!

Oh dear, it's that gathering we spotted in the background.  Mick and Grahame survey the damage to the rear of the E36 M3 Evo after a slight altercation at a roundabout.  Ooops.  Hope you get it sorted okay guys.

Grahame had to depart after this, work to do.

Mick also had to make his goodbyes and we wished them well on their way.

Floody had already gone and should have had half of the rabbit costume on by this time...

Now, on to Whitby (via Lastingham, Rosedale, Egton Bridge, Grosmont, Ruswarp....and I think we took in the Alps at some point too)...

It's up towards Rosedale after coming through Hutton le Hole.  In front of me is Rhys who joined us with his better half at Helmsley.  In front of him is the now doghair-free Baur and AndyS who was intent on killing as many trial's bikers as possible but failed miserably.

Fortunately, Cliff and 320Ci cleared them out behind me.  The little device on my windscreen is the Road Angel II - which bleeped in the middle of nowhere for some reason.  Extra terrestrials?  Hmm, perhaps an Audi was in view somewhere?

We arrive in Whitby!  Cliff's better half decides it's getting chilly and dons a coat.  Of more concern to all was the fact the car park was a bit muddy and we counted a total of 7 mudflicks between our cars.  Disgraceful.  North Yorkshire County Council shame on you - and you charged us £2 for the pleasure of it.  Ever heard of concrete?

The sunny was blazing and it was joyous to behold the Abbey in all it's glory.  What you can't see is the gathering of 5 Max Power VW's that followed us in and proceeded to rip on the grass with their free revving, very noisey, ultra high spinning...850cc engines.  Pants to you all.  You looked daft.  Even dafter than the marks my shades had made across my nose because of the sun....

Look!  He found it!  It was in Whitby all the time!  Having buried his twin pipes into the embankment initially, 320Ci was eventually able to relocate his Beemer to the rank of German cars opposite and it looked much more at home.

Everyone gets themselves ready....what for we're not sure, but we got ourselves ready anyway!

If you look ever so carefully you can see 2 mudflicks on the OSF of Cliff's car.  He booked a full valet on his way home...

Whereas mine had just buried it's front valance in the bank.....

Liz poses for a shot beside her ever so shiney Baur 320 (Lucozade all round apparently????).

Whilst AndyS's car was being stared out by some old codger to the right (you can just see his feet).  He had a Megane people carrier.  We passed on our sympathies and left.

But the convertible drivers were delighted they'd had their hoods down for a solid 5 hours by now!  An amazing achievement in the UK!

I went for a walk backwards and almost fell off the embankment.  Fortunately, no-one was looking and I escaped severe embarassment...

It's not just any old mud, it's dirty mud, it's just not on.  Liz replies by saying she thinks the doghair was a Labrador.

What on earth is Rhys doing?  He looks desperate for the loo.

No-one seemed to notice that 320Ci's car was slipping into the mud at a rate of an inch a second and within minutes of this picture being taken it had gone completely.  Yes, he'd lost it again.

The rest ponder what to do and after a short walk to the Abbey we had a little chat, put the world to rights and wandered back to our cars for the long trip home.

A GREAT DAY - WELL DONE TO ALL WHO STAYED THE DISTANCE (AND TO THOSE WHO COULDN'T MAKE THE DISTANCE TOO).

One ot two missed gears I think (oh, the joys of an auto in sports mode)

Just about to cross the swing bridge in Whitby, 10 points for a tourist, toes a point each - small children/rodents 5 bonus points..

..after one swift run up the embankment (going for a pee, indeed.. ) get a better viewpoint.

Fabulous photo's Rhys, or should I say David (Bailey).

Love the Abbey and the Daffodil.

Bit of colour adustment in Photoshop done too?

I agree, a great day.  More of the same please!  Maybe one around Northumberland or somewhere?  Or the full coastal route (that'd be fun but not the same fun roads perhaps).

Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and thanks to all for making me feel so welcome on what was actually my first ever outing.  Nice to meet fellow enthusiasts and put faces and voices to names and text.

I have to get all the brake dust off my wheels on Tuesday though..(taking a day off to do that and get rid of the flies welded onto the front valance after my rather swift run home).

I should also say thumbs up to the Durham guys because on the way back up, just past Norton on the A19, I came upon 3 MG's in convoy and they spotted me coming, moved aside, and each gave the thumbs up sign - I recognised two of them from Bowburn in the morning.  Good on ya for remembering the car (although where the hell did you all disappear to during the day!!!!?????).

Had to do a bit of adjustment in photoshop due to it being a small digi (only slight correction though)

Great to meet everyone, some again .

Coasting, your car is seriously quick, it filled my rear view mirror in no time, nice run - lots of twisty, if not rather bumpy, single track with several bikes getting in the way at one point..

Shiny calipers lookes realy nice, like the rest of the car - pristine. Nicest 6 I've seen in a long while (last one was Howards white one, but red looks a lot better).

Had to give our lass a slap, she said it looked like a capri from the back, but suppose it was ok for a 6..

She doesn't know a nice car if it ran her over (don't get ideas ) she prefers the new ones, oh well..

I'm telling you....it said small pie, not gigantic pie.  £2.60, I thought it was a bit pricey for a small pork pie!

Hey, where did you go to?  I realised when we were sat in the area behind the Abbey that you'd disappeared!

Did you go down into Whitby or had you gone home by then?  We didn't lose you en route to the Abbey did we?  If we did, sorry about that, I was trying to think when we'd last seen you and I couldn't recall it.

Here's some more pics from today....the action shots are courtesy of my other half !

Chris's stunning M3, not a lot else to say about it

MG's all lined up, prior to take off at Bowburn services.......oh that reminds me, must apologise for going through the petrol station with Mark the wrong way to get near the front of the grid

Anybody know the guy in the 3 series saloon? He must have felt safe parking with the 'flock'.

E46's all lined up, quick hide before our lass spots us. (Chris, she's called Sarah)

Chris on route, stopping to pick up a sheep to substitute for the lack of a coat, cant' beat a live woolly jumper....(apparently).....think I would rather have the dog hair than wool everywhere

Rhys spots a couple out walking and goes for 20 points.

Would of got to Whitby sooner but could'nt get past this M3

Trying to take the M3 on the inside into the right hander....only joking Chris

Follow the leader over the moors.....couldn't hear the cd for the 'rasp' from Chris's motor

We had a sneaky suspicion that we were been followed by a 320Ci....could this be the missing car ???

Hhmmm tried to shake him, but he's still there

Hi there

All parked up at Whitby after been stung for 2 quid to park on the mud.....if I wanted to park on the mud I would of got an X5.....oh they're not meant for off roading either ???

AAaahhh, I think they want to be alone together  Oh look at the mud on my bumper!

Well guys, thanks for an excellent day out, me and our lass really enjoyed it. Hey Chris, we had a few good (dare I say risky) over taking moves on the way towards Loftus

Can't wait for the next one, wouldn't mind doing Northumberland and Holy Island. I won't be able to make the meeting this week, I am off to Spain on business in the morning and wont be back until Friday. Will try and make the next one.

P.S. Chris, the car is all washed and cleaned, ready to come out and play next weekend

Excellent shots there Cliff!  Thanks to the missus for the action shots too, I'm going to take a copy of those.  First time I've ever seen my car with me actually in it!  Leans to the side eh...

Sheep what sheep?  I wondered what the fluff was on the underside...

I wish I'd have had a passenger in with me because I could have got some cracking shots of your shiny 325 behind me, looked very nice indeed.

You're right about the overtaking too.  I pushed it to the redline going past the bikes on the way up past Boulby, but it felt good so hey it must have been okay! (Hmm!).

I had a great little jaunt up Saltburn Bank too, a bit of traction control versus tyre squeal round 3 bends and two auto-blip-downs - much fun!

Loved the day, loved the company, can't wait for another.  I'd second the Northumberland and Holy Island idea too - great trip, particularly if we take the coast route up to Seahouses etc.

Maybe Chris and myself could plan a route for that one....you up for it Chris?

Yes, I'll give that a go no problems.  I think Mick had posted a planned North Coast Event, but we were waiting for firmed up details on it.  Any news Mick?  Are we in a position to pursue it?

We could have a 'variable joining run' a bit like today with Rhys joining at Helmsley.

I think we were VERY lucky with traffic today too.  We didn't hit any delays at all and that's quite incredible when you consider it has been the best weather so far this year and even Whitby was quiet by Sunday standards on it's roads (other than the Land Rover on the swing bridge who seemed to take an age to run 5 people over).

I'm certainly ready for another event soon.

Good job no-one used the malton road to go to Whitby, it would have been jammed solid, back roads are much better and more interesting.

Jesus, I'm having a bad name/facts day!!!!

Sorry about that!  But hey, if it takes a ring to do it...well why not!

Anyway, living in means almost the same these days.

Just remember that they whinge 4x as much later in life - and they do too.  Mine has just told me I haven't helped in the house today?

Huh?  Telescopic arms?  Where do I get those from?

"I tell you, I did NOT ask for that size Pork Pie nor did I ask for a whole cow in my sandwich."

..yeah, right, is that why all the sheep were running away with fear in their eyes?

I'm just amazed we didn't get lost.  Janet is not known for her navigation skills!

I was surprised how many chavs had come to Whitby.  Robin Hoods Bay would have been more salubrious.

Holy Island or the Lake District would be good venues.

The Durham Thoroughbred Wheels website is http://www.dtw.cjb.net - www.dtw.cjb.net Keep an eye for further events.

I think I need an E30 325 auto cabriolet . . .

Andy what time did you leave Whitby? I waited until just after 4 and then followed Rhys out.

Coasting, I had a walk into Whitby for a ice cream, only spent an hour down there before I had to tackle them stairs again, phew.

I am up for a drive out to the Lakes or Holy Island, soon soon

Not sure if I can make the meeting on Wed, I am on nights

Anybody seen a blue 320ci

Was after 5:00pm.  Still quite a few MG's about (and the Max Power lot).

I have to say hats off (or hoods off) to Andy and Janet for leading our line.  We didn't take a single wrong turn (or not to my knowledge) despite the best attempts of the MG lot to lose us at every opportunity.

Unfortunately Whitby has become a recognised Cruise and Max Power hot spot.  You usually meet them in the queue to get over the swing bridge, revving their sewing machines with bass booming out to such an extent you could be forgiven for thinking the Endeavour had fired a few broadsides (if only it did!!!).

Quote Holy Island or the Lake District would be good venues.

Both get the thumbs up from me.

Quote The Durham Thoroughbred Wheels website is http://www.dtw.cjb.net - www.dtw.cjb.net Keep an eye for further events.

We don't have to wait for them to organise something though do we?  Perhaps an idea for the NE Meeting to try to get something set up.

Nah, we'll just chop the top of your 635Csi with a pair of cutters borrowed from a local fire station?  Trust us do you?
