Not having a good week this week, a squal has appeared from somewhere, its intermittent, when i turn the lights on the squal gets louder when i turn it off it quietens down, the car had a new alternator just before i bought it, sounds like belt noise, not aways there, any ideas or solutiuon to the problem,

If its had a new alternator then did it have a new belt fitted at the same time? probably just the belt slipping a little, either replace it or tighten it up, if that doesn't stop it listen to where its coming from, when my water pump seized on my old 316 the belt started to slip a little first.

Although the belt is alreay quite taught, i might as well try tigtening it a bit more, how hard is this to do?

Varies, but it can be a bloody nightmare to get tight enough

Its me again, went down to the car earlier, turn the key and all i got was a buzz or whine, the engine was not firing, i'm beginning to think its not a starter motor, eventually managed to start it.

Hi

I had a similiar problem with my 320i '94, and if I remember rightly, (twas about two years ago), it was the alternator seizing. That in turn stopped it from starting and running. Maybe worth getting it checked over. How long have you owned the car??

Regards,

Andy.
