Subject: 5 Series register ?
Date Posted: 28-January-2005 at 08:41

I have been chatting to the lovely "Gerri" at the club office this morning.

She has expressed an interest in setting up a 5 series register as more and more club members have the 5 series.

She is looking for a volunteer to be in charge of this register, if you are interested in doing this you need :

To be a club member.

To have some knowledge of the 5 series ( you don't have to be a mechanic, if you were to get any queries you cant answer, you can always ask on here).

To allow your phone number to be published in the club mag.

If anyone is interested, either ring Gerri on 01225 709009 ( club office ), or drop her an e-mail to mailto:bmwcarclub@btconnect.com - bmwcarclub@btconnect.com

As a new member to the club I would be a tad reluctant to accept the mantle of responsibility for this role, but would certainly be glad to chip in my opinions. Role on with the register.

Another new member to both club and forum here and although doubt I have knowledge, etc for the post I would love to see a 5 series register - any news on it?

Posted By: Nigel
Date Posted: 16-April-2005 at 16:39

No news at the moment that I know of.

To be honest, knowledge of the 5 series isn't the most essential part of running the register, the time to do it would be the most important part.

No reason why a new member(s) shouldnt have a go.

I'm not sure why you think that should stop you Derek.

I think one of the Scottish boys may be taking this up, but could be wrong as I haven't had any club office feedback.

As a new member and the owner of 2 E34's I'd love to have a go at this! It would be useful to know a bit more about what's involved, exactly - but on the face of it sign me up!

What do you mean Gas conversion LGP stuff ?

I gather you can get a grant for that from the govt but I know very little about it

it could be a good one for me too as Ive done over 2,000 miles in 3 weeks.

Lovely cars tho arn't they

Yes LPG conversion, cost is about £2000-£2500. Essentially give the car an equivelent of 50-55mpg. Do the sums for yourself but for me even with 12k a year it will pay for itself in less than 2 years.

There are no grants for cars this old im afraid. If thats going to be the kind of mileage you do then i would suggest get on ASAP.

I have been following this topic with interest and wondered what progress has occurred? I am interested in putting in my two-pence worth!
Is their enough interest to have a quick get together to discuss it further at the National Festival?
I will give "Gerri" a ring early in the week.

Firstly may I appologise to any 5 series owners who made it down to Gaydon looking for the 5 series register.  I seemingly am meant to be in charge of the register but have heard nothing for over 3 months, this despite writing an article for the club magazine and sending in a cple of pics of my car.

I received on thursday a pack containing a layout showing that I had been allocated 15 spaces for 5 series.  Surprise, Surprise I had no time to organise 15 cars in two days.

I was originally told that I would receive support from the club for a banner etc, but nobody has even called me.

Next year I will be organising my own banners etc and will start sourcing cars for the stand later in the year.

Once again may I apologise for the lack of organisation, but it was out of my hands.

Gaydon - What a superb turn out! Even better than any previous years! The organising committee deserve multiple thanks for their extremely hard work.

I did look for the 5 series register stand but there were enough 5's to admire and compare. My real aim was to see how the various "add ons" looked before I considered buying such items for my E39. I liked some of them but changed my mind about a few others!

Yes folks once again the club organisers strike,  no sign of the promised 5 series register article, well theyve only had it six months and no sign of the urgent you really need to return this to hit the deadline article on the 5 series haynes manuals.

Starting to make me look really stupid now,  im going to start work on my engine conversion that will run the E34 on water instead of petrol, im bound to have finished the development work by the time the article appears.  Roll on the christmas 2007 issue.

The Club orgainsers have been hard at work with John Sharpe in Scotland but unfortunately the e-mail address he gave us did not work properly and the home address he gave was not quite complete and our letters did not reach him. Not surprisingly we were reluctant to publish his "launch" article in Straight 6 as we were unsure if he was still on the planet! This article now appears in the December issue of the main magazine.

Its like a human forum system with a sort of central hub or reference point-no offence to anyone I've just called a hub!

The register is a collection of car club members with a particular type or style or age or model (or interest in that type)all grouped together.

The idea is that information on these types of cars, events , interest stories and help can be passed around the type of people who would be interested and possibly able to help. Not everyone has access to the forum. The larger the register the more information there is flowing and this can be passed around accordingly, plus theres a dedictaed 5 series update via the register in the CC mag.

Having said that IIRC from my past BMs I'm still in the 3 series register, the coupe register and the Mpower register.

I'm sure someone'll be along soon to correct me though where needed.

Have come to a big decision over the running of the 5 register.

I have for a wee bit now decided i can not carry on as your register chairman due to work and private commitments.

I do not have enough spare time to commit and properly run the register in the best interest for you as the members.

I will remain a member of the 5 register.

Anyone who wishes to step in to the forefront and register themselves as the chairman please do so by contacting the club and stating your interest.

It is in your interest that someone puts there name forward so that the reg can remain as a fuctioning reg if no one takes over the i dont know what will happen the club may take over and run i can not say.

I will be attending Gaydon this year i have got hotel booked and holls booked for this great occasion

Thanks Ian

I have e-mailed a copy of this to the club and am awaiting ther reply
