Fact or fiction? Any GPS verified experiences? How's the (E36 evo) feel at that speed? Academic really but how does one remove the limit? Mine has cruise control and I've been told disconnecting the control unit removes the limit. But that sounds like BS to me. Once I get mine checked out on the dyno so I know it's not going to blow up at high load in 6th I'll probably have a bit of a go myself. Andy |

It used to be that you remove a spring from inside the distributor cap, but I suspect on these more modern cars its more sophisticated than that! ------------- Phil |

On the E36 M3 (and presumably latter model) it is controlled by the ECU. *People* have said that once the Evo tops out, it shows an indicated 165 ish on the speedo. But remember these are approx 10% inaccurate. To remove it the ECU needs adjustment either by replacing the chip or by a re-map. Was there not something about one of the limiters being on 6th gear only so that there was no limit in 5th gear? Had my Evo remapped and top speed limit removed, Had it up to 170 on gps at about 6,350 rpm it was still pulling, then I bottled it, very unstable on the front end, scary This was done a private test track off course

| it is easy to remove the governor, it is part of a remap i do for the car and the normal top speed (if you go there) is an indicated 170-175mph |

Took my Blue one thru 160 in 5th,would have went off clock (170+) easily in 6th.About 165 showing on clock,then I slowed down.A mate said his slowed at 155
on clock,but not sure what gear he was in. I think my old one was chipped/remapped as it revved higher than std(7600) as well. ps the new one revs to 7800 eek! Car very stable at that speed(rear spoiler!) and plenty grunt left(180ish tops?) -------------

That was simply a rev limiter rather than a top speed limiter, ultimitely it would limit the top speed, but also limits top speed in each gear. Simple centrifugal force in the cap, cutting revs. They were soooo bad some cars would limit at about 4000 rpm, some you could blow up!! I once had a 'pub question' about this guys car, (XR3i) he asked why it sounded like a bag, thought it needed a new engine but it was just the damn rev limiter kicking in around 2500-3000 rpm. Ha -------------

I had 155mph indicated yesterday whilst driving on the continent, that was in 6th gear. It got there with worrying ease...the missus curbed my fun at that point.
I am amazed how fast the car is, I did 650 miles without a break, only real problem is the size of the tank, dont Alpina do a 95l conversion? |

My 3.0 will go to 156mph exactly in 6th & no more, but will get there with relative ease. It will rev higher in 5th & get to about the same speed, however I wouldn't recommend it on anything other that a very smooth road, I mean track :o) as it gets very skittish at the front over about 145mph.

Hey, us ZM owners are stuck with 5 gears and a 3.19 '180mph Autobahn' diff. I know a chap who recorded 165 on the tacko but only 156 on the GPS on std ecu. Think it was at Beford aero. My ZM redlines to 8000 on the clock but apparently only 7600 on the dyno. I'm extending the redline to a true 8000-8100 revs v.soon and having the M delimited but then aim to stick in a 3.73 146mph racing diff to spice up the sprint times... who needs 150mph+? ------------- www.lbmracing.com

i think 155 is fast enough unless you use your car on the track on a regular basis,and yes it does get up to that speed rather quick,i always tell people the evo comes into its own after a ton. theres not many cars that will keep up with one after a ton. darren.

That's because there aren't that many cars with knocking on 300bhp! At slower speeds less powerful cars might out drag the M3 because weight, gearing and mid range torque will all work in their favour. The M3 probably has a higher revlimit than these other cars and is going at a significantly smaller percentage of its top speed as speeds increase meaning it might be hanging onto 4th maybe while they're going into 5th etc. As far as "155 is fast enough", I'm confused. Explain what this "fast enough" concept is. Presumably it's something along the same lines as "powerful enough", something else I've heard but can't comprehend. Andy |

Ha ha!! I actually used to think like this!! as most of the performance cars I'd had were built for 147 MPH (220sx), 152 MPH (Calibra turbo), 143 MPH (Celica GT4), so this was all you'd get (showing 154 on the 200sx clock though!! ) when you drive something that will actually go easily over the 150 you start to realise that, unless the car is a Supercar, you don't really want to be going much faster!! Well that's my opinion!! (also do it on the track!! I found out the hard way back in June!! Instant ban for me -------------

I've had my E36 Evo up to 162 on GPS, with still more to go before I lifted off. It seemed rock solid but at that speed I was more interested in what the road surface was doing ------------- M = Money 3 = 3 x as much.... |
