Newbie to the board, but not to BMW. Been a BMW
nut since my grandfathers 2500 in 1975. Now
driving a mint 1995 520iSA auto (UK car) and an avid
E34 fan. Nice to see so many fans of the marque
but not too many E34's it seems

I look forward to exchanging views with my
compadres.

Joe, what's with the Hitler?

Is that how you feel every time you switch on the radio?

I don't know if I can say 520i auto and trackday in the
same sentence, I wouldn't want to get in your way as
I'm cruising around listening to Lyric.

Yes Welcome Don. Dont care too much for Lyric FM though. I have a friend that's really into classical music and he likes the station, so I keep him out of my car as much as possible, or just say that the fuse is blown. You might be a bit harder to convince though.

Adrian - a 523i at 200bhp, thats a neat trick, was it a
manifold swap? How did you do it? I hope you told
your insurance company!

I have a very mixed bag in the CD changer, classical
music for better economy, chart music for when I am
late for work. I think my stereo is linked directly to the
cars ECU is the beat seems to effect the mapping.

Don - Well actually it has approx 190bhp and 200lbft of torque, due to chipping and supersprint exhaust system. I also have a h&n panel filter but that doesn't improve things that much. The intake/throttle body jobbie isn't that straight forward and involves alot of cutting etc, as well as the obvious cost and off the road time. WOuld add about 10bhp but I'm not sure if it is worth the hassle. Do you know of anyone who could do this job ?. How about Westward engineering in Enfield ?.

Dont get me wrong some of the lyric stuff is quite good, and keeps you mellow but a friend of mine is a hardcore fan and it isn't for me, especially when they are anouncing a track from a 1920's album from someone my great grandfather wouldn't have heard of, and the quality of the production is terrible, but some of the remastered stuff can be fine.

Killian,

Will consider this if there isn't too much time off the road. The ecu mapping will also need adjusting if this job is done. Will check with Alpina527.

thanks man

IIRC the ECU doesn't *need* remapping but Im sure it wouldn't harm getting it done.
K.
His reply to be from a while back:-

Hi Killian

Here are some details:

The manifold conversion is designed to remove the restrictions that BMW deliberately built into the M52 2.8 engine. They did this to restrict the power to 193 bhp (the same bhp as the old 2.5 unit). The reason for the restriction is the German insurance market, which penalises cars which have more than 194 bhp. However, the 2.8 has a much better torque figure than the 2.5 unit. It will fit all E36 328s and all E39 528s up until 1998 model. It will also fit he 323 /523 models with similar gains in bhp.
The kit takes about 4 or 5 hours to fit. The only downside after installation is the fuel rail cover cut outs don’t quite match the manifold, though it is barely noticeable. Also a small piece of one of the fuel rail bracket needs trimming off. Everything is reversible, should you ever wish to resort back to the original.
Power gains with a free flow filter are in the region of 20 bhp, typically giving around 215bhp. Tests have shown that this manifold will flow 275 cfm of air as opposed to the standard 185cfm! Schrick make a free flow manifold, which costs £900 without the body! The Schrick unit flows 250cfm.
The manifold itself is an extensively re worked 2nd hand M50 manifold, complete with the seals that came with it. Though you might prefer to buy new ones. It has a new chamber, screwed and  bonded into the underside, which houses the idle valve, air sensor, and oil recirculation valve in exactly the same position as the original M52 manifold. There are also two new special fittings, which accept the standard M52 stabiliser brackets and idle valve cage. Also in the kit is a big bore throttle body and if required, a big bore traction control body. These are sold on an exchange basis, where you return your old body or bodies once the kit is fitted. I will also need the plastic chamber from your old manifold that houses the idle valve etc. The manifold comes with a slightly reworked one already fitted.
This conversion has to be easily the best power per pound that you can buy for the M52 2.8 engine. The engine revs all the way to the redline without any hesitation at all. Whereas the standard engine struggles past 5,000 revs.

Superchips are available from McNamaras, my car
showed an improvement, albeit slight. You are
usually advised to also use a K&N or J&R filter
airfilter in conjunction with a chip, although I decided
against this as I have read too much about poor air
filtration with performance filters and i like my engine
to much to harm it.

Killian - Did you get a costing for this kit ?. Who would fit it, I was thinking of Westward engineering because they could do the proper diagnostic tests.

Is it only me, or does this seem like alot of hassle for limited gain.
