I've just applied for the Hethel and Cadwell Park track days, and I've been told that I need to provide my own helmet.

I've done a few track days in the past, but they were all with Porsche Club Great Britain, and it was always possible to borrow a helmet on the day.

Any advice on what to look for and where to buy one? I presume that you really need to go to a shop (rather than buy on-line) to ensure that the fit is OK, but do I need a Snell rated helmet? I'm definately in the "occasional track day for the fun of it" class rather than the "race tyres and roll cage" category, so don't want to pay silly money. On the other hand, I am rather fond of my head and hope that it will last me a lifetime, so I'm prepared to get the right thing.

Also, my wife (who has never done a track day) is planning on coming along and may drive one or two of my sessions. I presume that she'll also need to buy a helmet?

I found this on the easytrack website

"From 2003 most of the circuits in the UK will be insisting that
all trackday drivers wear a TYPE A helmet. "

Darren / Philip -  I think that rule applies to Octagan Circuits as I asked at Goodwood and they seem to be unaware of this. I think its a BS6554 or something like that (not at home so can't check mine)

Demon Tweeks can supply them quite cheaply and have a good range - Easytrack can get a discount if you contact them. You ned to check the Snell certification is up to BS standards (which it sometimes exceeds) - remember, the muppet at the circuit will only want to see a BS sticker - a Snell one won't be quite the same and if you get a jobsworth then you are in the stook!

Grand Prix racewear has a good selection, with BS hats (Bell) starting at 150 notes - that's where I'll be shopping in a couple of weeks.

Open face might be worth considering too don't forget.

I think an open face is fine if you don't have an open car - I have a Sparco one which is great.

i'd look at the sparco ones from demon tweeks they do them for around £150 and i think they are fire retardant as well. i use a motorbike one, shoei in white cost me £180 and it is BS rated (they don't use type A etc anymore) and has a british motorcycle motorsport sticker on it, so i;d think if it was passed for bike motorsport it should be good enough for track days. and i can also use it on a motorcycle if i need to then.

I use a Bell Mag 4 (open face ) for track use, cost me £200 from the Autosport show, this has a Snell 2000 rating.  I have my Arai RX7 RR4 which I use for my bike everyday and this one cost about £400.

You want to get a helmet that fits you quite snug and one that is comfortable, so do your shopping around and try a few on first for fit before you buy.

Andy.

earlier in the year I bought a AGV Demon Top Hat Helmet which is ACU Gold & Snell M2000 certified. Normally they are around £150 but I got mine for £99 (it's last year's model sir). The colour scheme is a bit bold but when I'm wearing it I can't see that. I also subscribed to the theory that if it's good enough for a bike then it must be fine for a closed car on a track (opps Better Driving) day, I hope I'm right.

I agree with Andy, try it on to make sure it fits even if it's from the same manufacturer, I was amazed at the variances.

This is the snell website http://www.smf.org/certlist/m20cert.txt , maybe useful to confirm it's ok.

the bike/car thing is all well and good, except for the fire proofing thing, you won't get burnt in a bike fire as you'll more than likely be 100 feet further down the tarmac...

Dear ///M5,

I notice with dismay that you have not included Croft in you list of events.. and we have plenty of helmets that you can use!

If you would like I could send you all the stuff for you to print out

Motorbike shops are the best place to go to try on lots of helmets before you buy one.

And yes.. we are looking for Type A.

Nick - Sorry about not booking Croft, but Cadwell and Hethel are reasonably close to where I live.

Went to my local motorbike shop and tried on loads of helmets. They told me that helmets with an "E" marking and a number beginning in "05" are to ECE 22.05 which is the equivalent of Type A. Is this true? I have ordered a helmet (fit was good, colour wasn't; so they are getting a plain black one in for me) but could cancel if they are telling porkies or if this won't be accepted at the Better Driving Days.

ok, i have a shoei raid hat, this is type A equivalent, as mentioned before this has a british motorcycle sport ACU approved sticker on it, inside it has E6 and 050013-p on a label, if you goto http://www.roads.dft.gov.uk/vehicle/standards/helmets/ you can find some more info on type approval.

Thanks for the link, but now I'm even more confused!

As far as I understand it, there are different regulations for (a) Road Use and (b) Motorsport - possibly including "Better Driving" track days.

a) For Road Use, the Department for Transport site seems to suggest that either BS 6658:1995 or UN ECE 22.05 is acceptable.

b) For Motorsport/Track use, I guess it's down to the organisers of the event as to what they require, but this could be BS 6658 and/or BS 6658 Type A and/or ACU Gold and/or Snell and/or ECE 22.05.

Today I ordered a Caberg Just One Plus and my wife ordered a Caberg Katana. These helmets are both ECE 22.05 rated (but have no other ratings.) I still don't know if they are acceptable for Cadwell or Hethel :-(

Any assistance or clarification appreciated; until a week ago I just thought that a helmet was a helmet was a helmet!

Phillip

I am as confused as you. I have just spoken to Chris (the organizer for Hethel) as I wanted to see if they had any helmets to loan on the day. They won't have so I will be out to borrow or buy one for my better half - Gillian - to wear as a passenger. Chris mentioned that at Hethel motorcycle helmets will be fine but at Cadwell proper motorsport helmets will be needed. Given that I will not be going to Cadwell I didn't explore what the difference is any further. I intend to get to the bottom of it when we are at Hethel.

I can't believe how difficult it is to get a straight answer.

See you there....

From what I understand, the likes of Octagon and other track day organisations are happy with EC22-05 therefore these are fine for trackdays (and better driving days I guess), the Motor Sports Association (MSA) say that for clubman type sprint events the miniumum they accept is yer type A BS6658 and Snell SA95 or 2000 is good for all.

So any of these should be fine for trackdays but not all are okay for bike use.!

So something like Sparco formula or Bell M5 are BS 6658 for £150 or £200 respectively or Bell sport 3 or K1 sports for a little over £200 are Snell approved. I'm going to get one of the above - all depends on which fits the best!
