My 1982 E28 has the wrong dashboard fitted.  The PCB has no housing for the ABS warning light, nor does the right indicator tell-tale light work and nor does the speedometer.

Thanks to me keeping hold of a dashboard from a Volvo B10M engined coach, I have managed to get the lights jerry-rigged to work using donated bulb holders from the Volvo PCB.

Is there a way of getting the speedometer to work on this dashboard, please?

There are no markings on the PCB as to which BMW model type its supposed to fit into.

I really must get my technician to return the 6-Series workshop CD-ROM he borrowed last year...

I don't know how to tell for sure what instruments you have, other than to suggest that you get the BMW part no. from it, and check it out using a BMW parts disc (which I don't have, but I'm sure others who post on here do).

-your instrument panel may be from a 628 (or a similarly more basic E28 5 series model) which is similar but wouldn't necessarily have had the ABS fitted (I think). From what I recall your car has had a lot of replacement parts and has done a lot of miles so it wouldn't surprise me if the instrument panel has been changed; they usually need something doing to them at some point and it would be a miracle if yours hadn't needed something by now. The most common instrument fault is the back-up NiCd batteries, so you may as well check these too.

-incidentally, the speedo, the direction indicator light tell-tales, the high beam, front fog and rear fog indicator lights all share a common ground connection, via #16 on the panel. This might be at fault (although if it is then it is hard to see how the LH indicator tell-tale would work).

-The wiring to pins #8 and #12 should read intermittent continuity  from the speedo sensor on the diff housing when the rear wheels are turned (have someone jack up one side of the car and turn a rear wheel). If there is never continuity the speedo will never read anything.

-pin 12 should look a bit volty with the ignition ON. If not the speedo has an internal fault or fuse #12 has blown.

-also, if you have a 635 your car is an E24, not an E28; it is just mostly based on E28 mechanicals from mid '82 on.

 -I hope this helps

cheers

Unfortunately I need the lights working for the MOT, so although the holders are from a 24v coach PCB and needless to say the lights are quite dim, at least they will be working and therefore satisfy the MOT tester.

All the welding is now completed, I went to see the car and the entire dash is hanging out all over the place.  Why I kept the brand new coach dashboard is beyond me, but I'm now very glad I did keep it...over £850 plus vat and now in bits.

Its a good job I have a sense of humour....
