The position for Owners , after the Office Of Fair Trading got an agreement from a number of Car Manufactorers, who sell products into the UK market, including BMW , appears to be-

Purchasers of New Cars get a 3 year warranty, which may be extended at the end of each 12 month,s by agreement with BMW.Where the Routine servicing as advised by BMW , to keep the warranty valid, is carried out is the owners choice of approved Dealer OR Independant Service station.

Any parts must be approved BMW parts, and service carried out to the recommended BMW schedule.Any work required to be carried out which will come under the Warranty heading, Must be carried our by an Authorised BMW dealer. This could be a difficult area, if service work is underway at an Independant service station, when a warranty claim is likely, and work cannot be completed.

An independant Warranty if covering Major items, would not affect the similar situation , if works were underway at an Independant service station, BUT - each case would require confirmation , Prior to works starting.    An interesting point, BMW have Extended the 4 Year Plus scheme to 6 Year Plus, saving even more on Parts & Labour for the services for 1998 models on.

All owners should check the exact confirmation of the proceedure, prior to any works being started.

surely after the block exemption stuff that went through the EU recently, they can't force someone to stick to a BMW dealer for servicing and OEM parts as long as they are up to standard
