I haven't found a substitute relay - tried 7 and 5 Series, and they don't work. Bought a used replacement which did the trick. Try Steve Crampton - I don't have a contact for him but he regularly sells E24 parts in the classic cars section of ebay - he sold me mine.

Thanks for your input, still fiddling!

James, hope your gathering on Sunday goes o.k. Wish I could come but am at the other end of country!

Does anyone know if the dreaded relay that lives behind the flasher is common to any other model? There aren't many working 635's in Norfolk let alone cars in breakers!

Cheers, Delboy...

-checked it properly today.... I think it is rather sick after all.....

-I mean, the intensive reservoir isn't MEANT to fill up when you use the regular windscreen squirters, is it.....???

-more tinkering required......

...and, no, I haven't got time to fix mine, what with having the tracking corrected yesterday (it was way off), an oil & filter change coming up, and other "little" issues regarding the heater fan speed controls and central console backlighting

*sigh of resignation*

They operate by when you have the lights on and pull the wash-wipe stalk, or operate the intensive cleaner button on the end of the wiper stalk (not all cars have this.)
That relay is the most common cause of trouble - you only need to remove the o/s indicator lens, grille and indicator housing to get to it. Getting a used one from a breakers should save some money (dealers charge somewhere in the region of £50 for them!)
If you're feeling brave, you could dismantle the whole system and clean it up, but this is fairly involved and fiddly - but then you'd know if the motors were working.
Cheers

I don't think there are many sixes with operating headlamp wash wipe systems. In fact i don't know of any. I do know however that there is a relay that sits behind the off side wing which controls them and is only accesable by taking out the indicator and or the wing. i also know it is pricey to buy. Not wanting to put you off, but i hope that helps

Hi. Guys ( and Galls ) I am still busy trying to make these thing work but am not quite sure when they should work! In the handbook it seems to infer that they only operate at 30 second intervals while the lamps, and screenwash/ wipers are in use. Has anyone out there got a  635 with working lamp wash/wipe, if so how do you operate them? I think I must be having a really senior moment regardig the operating instructions in the book, cheers to all.
