mate, it should only fit in the housing one way. Just take careful note when taking the old one out..

M3 or just heavy foot? I always knew it was never going to be good mpg and im used to V8 and TDi Landrovers but never noticed a gauge go down as quick but i love the car. Any improvement in mpg is most welcome but if thats the mpg with new stat in, thats the mpg Dispearing in a fog of noise is much much better than a cloud of diesel fumes and smog.

When you take the old stat out, put the new one back in the same position.  Should only go in one way but you might be able to rotate it.  It shouldn't really matter how it is rotated when it sits in the block.

Have you got the means to remvoe the thermo viscous fan coupling?  You need a thin spanner 32 or 36mm plus means to stop the water pump pulley from rotating.  You will need to remove the water pump pulley to get in to remove the thermostat housing cover.

Just a thought but have you got a new thermostat housing?

The rubber seal on mine had gone as I had noticed a leak from it.  It also happend at the same time as when the thermostat had failed.

You have to take the stat housing off (obviously), at that age the rubber may have perished slightly and it doesn't quite seal properly when you put it back together.  Hopefully yours will be o.k.
