Greetings, my 1995 540i has done 180000 miles and the auto box has not had any fluid top up to my knowledge. Recently,it has started to hold itself in 4th gear and will not change up until redline is reached. I did discover that if the selector is moved quickly from D to 4 and back to D, it then changes up and revs are normal for speed.Any thoughts as to whether I need to do anything about this or do I stick with my `special procedure`? Thanks for reading this, any helpful suggestions appreciated.

Hi,

That's an interesting one. The redline in fourth gear must be pretty fast!

I am certainly not an auto box specialist, in fact I hate the things, but it sounds like a valve may be sticking as they often do with these lifetime oils. As far as I remember the autos on the E34s can be drained, flushed and refilled with fresh oil plus have the filter/gauze cleaned at the base of the casing. This would be my first port of call if a computer is unable to tell you otherwise?

I know the ZF auto boxes have filters in the oil pan. Easy enough job to do. Does the fluid smelt burnt? I would drain oil and try another filter if your box is a ZF.

Have you checked the fluid level?  Does the E34 have a dipstick, the E39 and E60 don't.

Could be low fluid, could be anything.

Check and top up the fluid if that doesn't work then you could try taking off the sump and replacing the fluid.  If that fails then you will need to take it to a transmission specialist for them to look over.

Realoem isn't working so I can't have a look at the autobox parts but it is of a vintage where the filter used to be a seperate part that you can swap out after dropping the sump.
