This happened to my E39 once.  Went out a few hours later and all was well and never happened again.

The E39 is full of electrical gremlins.

I changed my battery when it let me down and the number of electrical problems fell after the new battery.

Yip just like all the other electrical gremlins on the E39.  Fitting a new battery greatly reduced the number of electrical faults on mine.
