My 1999 528 tourer starts to shake through the front seats over 65 mph, peaks at 70, then seems to improve over that speed I've had the front wheels balanced but it's made no difference.

Any suggestions

Renkus.

Balancing the wheels does not always show a sideways movement (1) such as an "Egg" in the tyre.  Give them a good look over, preferably take them off and check.

Rear wheels can also get out of balance, and they may need doing.

Prop shaft can also get out of balance, but rather unlikely.  And it would be a bit noisy too if it was that.

(1) Although a Tyre man worth his salt would have spotted it when carying out the balance.

(1a) Unless he put the guard on the machine so the tyre was hidden during it's test-spin.  But again, if he was worth his salt, he should have done a final visual check without the guard on.

I don't think it is more serious than tyres or wheels.  Buckled wheel maybe...kerbed it lately?

HTH.

I have had the same problem with several of the cars I have owned over the years and it has always gone away when I have had new tyres put on. My last car, a Primera, used to vibrate between 60 and 70 and  90 and 100. Had all four wheels balanced and it made no difference. Got four new tyres put on and the problem went away.

So peter, at least one of those Primera tyres had a deformed tread, or an egg, or even a hard spot on the wall (Can happen with cheapo Taiwan type tyres).  Proof that balancing doesn't always work for the wheel wobble.

Wheel not go into the science of the frequency of wobble versus RPM of wheel and tyre pressure etc.  That needs a whole new forum!
