Hello, I am looking at the back end, to check out the Exhaust system, I actually have Discs on the Back; so it slightly different set up. First thing as if you have the shoes out and the drums off, then can spray it with WD, or what I use is pretty much the same thing, is the cleaner from Aldi or Liddle, which is often a fraction of the price; if you are going to belt cast pieces, use a hammer but bits of wood between what you are swinging at and what your hitting. after SPRAYING THE H-LL OUT OF IT it could still will be tight. It can take days to release this; not that your under there for days it just needs to be soaked and cleaned; soaked and cleaned. it takes a bit of patience, I spent a week in fact my neighbours say longer getting one screw out. as I don't have money to waste.
The alternate if you can is where it is lodged, you can put heat too it, a plumbers torch, but Let all Cleaning and Releasoll fluids evaporate and dry everything off, if your unsure don't do it.
Handbrake Cables from the day DOT have always caused issues; the only thing I would say is take your time. SURE THE GARAGE  WILL DO IT QUICKER, BUT THEY WILL CHARGE FOR EVERY PART THEY HAD TO TAKE OFF, DAMAGE OR ANYTHING ELSE.
If you were local in or around Glasgow I can stop past.
I am not a YOU TUBE member, but there are a lot of good Videos, by home Mechanic's who have went through similar issues; Just type in Brake Cable Remove from BMW for your Model REAR DRUM BRAKES, you might have to go through them but, you might even get a Video showing you not just how, But also some GOOD SHORT CUTS.
I replaced rear springs, follow BMW instructions it could take 2 days, I got a Video, IT TAKES ABOUT AN HOUR FOR BOTH.
Let me know, and I will have a look to see If I can point you better.

Hello, again, I had a quick look at the Drum set up, it is attatched too the lever arm, that operates the shoes in and a return spring release's them, It is like a U-shape bracket over the arm there is a Pin in the centre, it either has a Clip or the old fashion ones had Cotter(split) Pins, to knock the pin out the Clip has to be removed. I assume you have slackened off the Cable at the Handbrake end. As it will be still tight if that has not been slackened. With Discs on the back it is similar, set-up, but looks slightly different; but still it is a cable with a bracket onto a lever, and it has return spring too; they both pretty much do the same thing, Pull the brake on and the cable pulls a lever at the brakes, with BMW both have a form of return spring so when you release, the spring pulls the shoes or pads to allow the wheel to turn. I think some models ? have an outer guide piece as you get closer to the Back of the wheel, they do have guide clips starting at the Handbrake lever underneath so as well as slackening off at the Handbrake which inside the car under the gator in the centre console, you have to make sure you un-hook at all the clips, which also runs above the Exhaust in Places, wether you can un-hook above the exhaust easily I don't know.
I have not been underneath, completely yet.
Best of Luck
Jimmy
