According to my handbook, my cars uses oil that meets the spec of BMW Longlife 01 oil.  Nothing more technical than that.  No mention of 5W-30, 0W-30 or similar.....

Looking online and in various shops about 80-90% of the oil you can buy meets the spec of BMW Longlife 04 oil and so far I have only seen one or two oils that meet BMW Longlife 01.

Another look at my handbook also mentions that if you are caught short you could use BMW Longlife 98 to top up with.

When I read the BMW Longlife 98 bit, it got me thinking.

Are the numbers in the Longlife Oil something to do with the year?

When I had my E39, it was still old school and you could use semi-synth and wasn't on the longlife oil requirement and when looking for oil for the E39, I remember seeing oil that met with the spec of BMW Longlife 98.  Nowadays I haven't come across any reference printed on an oil container that states it meets BMW Longlife 98.

So have we done away completely with oil that is specced as BMW Longlife 98?

And is oil that is specced as BMW Longlife 01 on it's way out to be replaced with oil that meets the spec of BMW Longlife 04?

Any thoughts?

Andrew

Spoke with the helpful guys at BMW Fairbairns, Parts and they told me they only use two grades of oil in the whole workshop, one for the M Machines and then one for everything else including Minis.

The oil they would put in my sump is Castrol Edge 5W-30 which is the spec of BMW Longlife 04.  They guy I spoke to confirmed that Longlife 01 is now an old term and is being replaced by Longlife 01.

So I now need to source 8 Litres of Castrol Edge 5W-30.
