Probably a modification to the dreaded swirl flaps that crippled oil burning engines.  Modifications were made to later inlet manifolds to remove this achilies heel.

As I said earlier, modifications were made to remove the swirl flaps from newer inlet manifolds.  Newer cars don't have them and the spare part for the older cars was modified at the same time to eliminate them.

Hi Andrew,

I am currently agonising over whether to remove my swirl flaps which happen to be the latest variety that is the part number ending in '577. I have had them in my 320d for 2 years now but have always been relunctant to fetch them out. This is because it is difficult to locate a specfic case of failure on the latest version - plenty of hearsay though. Also there are some negatives that is loss of torque at low revs and mpg taking a hit! Some say that it may effect the life of the turbo! Also selling on a car which has been "modified" may not be appreciated by the buyer(garage or even Franchise). Generally I opt for cleaning/inspecting the Inlet Manifold on a yearly basis. However both alternatives are costly although the over kill method has its merit. I can locate a garage which will do the job for £100 if I supply the blanks, although my local Indie will charge £150 incl blanks and clean the EGR as well. The panic merchants on other forums will always say deflap.  So which is best ; clean and inspect or deflap! Personally I prefer the cleaning op as I know my Inlet Manifold is in good condition but ...........

regards Tony

Do nothing.  Trade it in, don't say a word.  Buyers beware.
