Need to buy some top up oil for the car.
BMW handbook that came with the car says use Castrol that meets BMW Longlife 01 and if you are struggling to find top oil you can use stuff that meets BMW Longlife 04. To me this implies use BMW Longlife 01 before using Longlife 04.
Opie Oil website says firstly says Longlife 01 then drills down to Castrol 0W-30 Edge FST which meets the spec of BMW Longlife 04.
Castrol website says 0W-30 Edge, click on the link and it take you to Halfords website which gives you further info that Castrol Edge 0W-30 meets BMW Longlife 01.
In B&Q on Sat morning, also looking at oil. Bottle of Castrol Edge 0W-30 Longlife 01 for under £13, not to shabby I'll buy that. Whilst I was in B&Q they had a Castrol branded flip chart which you can look up your car and find the correct oil. All Castrol stuff of course, looked up the Castrol chart and they were recommending using Castrol Edge 5W-30. Hmm everything from Castrol so far is 0W-30. Picked up a bottle of Castrol Edge 5W-30 and it says it meets Longlife 04.
Castrol Edge 0W-30 is Longlife 01 but the newer Castrol Edge 0W-30 FST is Longlife 04.
Also went to Halfrauds and very few of their range of Castrol Oils appear to meet BMW Longlife 01, all the Castrol stuff says meets Longlife 04. Having another look at the Castrol website this morning confirms this, most of the oils in their Castrol Edge branded range meet BMW Longlife 04 and only 1 is stated of meeting Longlife 01.
BMW have filled my sump with both Castrol 5W-30 and 5W-40 oil at differing services, neither of which had appeared when doing internet searches.
0104010401040104 Castrol Edge...Castrol Edge FST what's the difference....Head was buzzing after thinking about this on Saturday.
Does it really matter which version of BMW Longlife oil goes in my sump?
Is BMW Longlife 01 branded oils being done away with and replaced with Longlife 04 ?
What's the difference between BMW Longlife 01 and Longlife 04 anyway?
Oily confuzelled.

Think the main difference between 01 and 04 is sulphated ash content, a requirement of some engines, especially DPF equipped diesels, as your cars is petrol and not diesel with a DPF it does not really matter which you use. If your cars was a DPF equiped diesel the you would cause damage by using LL01.
Compare these 2, http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/castrol/EDGE%20Range/castrol-edge-0w-40-a3-b4.pdf http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/castrol/Castrol-edge-0w-30-fst.pdf Sulphate ash content is the main difference allowing a little for the 0w30 v 0w40. Edited by Sporty1 - 10-January-2012 at 09:47 |
