I have an issue with the boot lock on a '02 e39 saloon.
I can't open the boot with the remote or with the button in the dash, but I can open it with the physical key. The remote will open the doors, and the mechanism isn't set to the deadlock. Fuses look to be fine. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong? Thanks. Fey.

Chaffed wires between the boot lid and chassis, they are hidden in a black plastic rubber tube in the offside corner at the front of the boot lid I think. A small short or a broken wire, due to constant movement of the boot lid opening and closing may cause a wire to break or chaff on the bodywork.

It could also be the lock actuator. Do you get the usual whirring sound from the boot lid when you hit the remote button? If not, take a look at part 23 on realoem link below. It was described as the Actuator for Trunk lid on pre 09'97 cars but in the diagram looks to be a similar part. I had it fail on my old '97 523i.
I'd suggest starting with the simple, as Andrew has suggested, before jumping in to changing the part.

Probably a broken wire like Andrew said, I've repaired loads of these. Not saying its not the lock but a broken wire is a free fix and worth trying first.
