Any suggestions as to the best source of parking sensors for my E60?  One of my rear ones has given up life and is refusing to work.

As with other sensors you can usually buy the OEM bit from say Eurocar parts but they don't list parking sensors.  Wheels senors no problem but not parking ones.

Or am I best just to get a painted one from BMW at a few quid change of £100.

A friend of mine picked one up on ebay for his E46, it worked perfectly, and still is . IIRC they aren't colour coded on the E46, so probably a little easier to find.

Andrew,

one of my rear sensors has also packed up.
Got one off ebay for £24, had to paint it myself though, just need to get fitted and reset.

Have you checked that it still works after you painted it?  I would be worried that paint (albiet from a paint stick) would somehow affect the sensor or am I wrong?

I don't know that you would need a system reset if a new sensor is plugged in as mine works intermitently, when it's dry and warm!

Right, phoned BMW.

£110 + VAT so that's about £130 something....

Had another look on flebay.

Quite a few sensors for Minis and various X5 types, very few listed as E60s.  Concencous is that you buy one which might be green or blue or black or red or silver then paint it yourself.  Price £20 inc postage.

Hmm £130 or £20, let me think about that.  Off to do some more digging on t'interweb.

According to this E60 sensors are the same as the E39, E61, E63, E64, E85, E86.

^yeah you are right thanks for that.  E53 and the Mini too.  From some of the sources I was looking at yesterday, the same bit will also fit some Fords!

I've ordered one from Ebay for £20 and I'll keep you posted.

To be honest i'd go dealer all the way with this.

You could piss away money on ebay with bits that don't work and end up having to go to the dealer in the end.

Just my opinion.

I know Peter and part of me does agree with you.  I thought for £20 it was worth a punt.  I stripped it all down on Sunday (and then put it all back together only to do again probably at least twice again) and had a look and it is suprisingly simple so I'm prepared to gamble £20 on it.

It is sold as a brand new OEM part.

I'm of the opinion that BMW don't make cars they build them.  They buy in lots of bits from ZF, Siemens, SWF, Textar, ATE etc etc and then nail them together in a big shed.

By going direct for the OEM bit in this case is saving me £110 less painting costs which I'll use my touch up stick for.  I'm not too fussed about the painting bit as they aren't that obvious and for the cost saving it's one I'm prepared to accept.

Given what my car is now worth (very scary but only if selling) I would rather not spend a huge amount of cash on this particular 'nice to have' part.  I need tyres, brakes and an MOT soon and that is where I'll spend my money, buying decent  essential parts.

The only reason I'm replacing it is that it drives me daft everytime I turn on the igniton, BONG!! PDC failure and big orange warning lights on in the dash.  Plus I nearly rubbed the rear wing down the side of a Fiesta recentlyEmbarrassed

New sensor was delivered on Thursday, put two coats of my colour on it using my touch up paint stick and fitted it this morning.

See here for how to replace the sensor.

Saved over £100 on the part alone plus whatever BMW would have charged me for its fitting.
