I've recently noticed handling problems with my '93 318is. Problems: Some vibration in the steering when braking, although it is limited to wet weather and braking from speed, about 60mph. More pull on the steering to either side when moving over less than smooth roads. Felt some shimming in the rear of the car when running over bumpy roads. Noticed uneven wear on the front tires, worn more on the inside line. Suspicions: Camber in the front and back wheels doesn't look right. It's not huge but I suspect that going over bumps and driving in wet weather with the tires not fully vertical on the road is likely to cause at least some problems in the handling. Possibly the tires put on by the previous owner were just too large. Solutions? My understanding is that the camber on the front wheels of this model is not adjustable, so just bringing it to any garage isn't going to take care of this. Smaller tires would appear to be the answer, I suspect the previous owner basically put tires on that were really too large. I'm guessing this is something where I should just bring the car into the local BMW dealership and tell them the problem and ask them to look an see if there is any damage that is resulting from the bad camber of the wheels. Too bad I didn't spot this before I bought it, not to mention that the garage that originally looked at the car for me missed it, plus the mechanic that serviced it and another garage that recently did the tracking (or at least supposedly did the tracking). |
