Manual mode lets you move the cars weight around nicely - it locks the TC in every gear, so in-gear it's just like a manual - and feels much more stable in the twisties. The B10 has no LSD either but it doesn't seem to be a great issue, the grip is good and the TC unobtrusive. There was talk that the B6 LSD would be offered as a subsidised retrofit to B5 owners, don't know what the outcome was though...
You sure? ALPINA usually use progressive rate springs which ride smooth yet charge hard. |

Yeah its just like the picture without the Alpina stripes. Yes I'd love a e60 M5 but there aren't any avalible here at the moment yes there are new ones but don't really want a brand new one too expernsive. The Alpina is about 37k for a 2006 with 6000km on it so I think thats a good price. Fluffy I didn't drive it in manual mode so maybe that will make a difference as you say. The other thing that that was bothering me was that it doesn't have a LSD and that it seemed to be unsteady putting the beans down. It has the same springs as an e60M5 but the damping is a lot softer. I read an article about it and they said that its totally brillant for 95% of the driving that you want to do but you really need an M for the last 5%. For me its coming down to the Z4M coupe but I can't get the Alpina out of my mind cause it looks the mutts nuts and its totally and I mean totally loaded. Thanks for your input guys. Chap is calling back to agree a time to have my car inspected so I've got a wee bit of time to think about it. |

Had a look at a few pics of the B5 on tinternet and wasn't that impressed, to my taste the styling is somewhat dated. That was until I saw this Now that, I do like. I guess it is probably just the colour. Once BMW restyle those horrible front lights, it'll be really lovely. Horses...........courses etc

Mate,
I'm not going to tell you to sell or not to sell the M5 but what I will say is that whatever you buy you'll regret selling and will want another immediately. have came across more than a handful of M5 owners who have returned to this marque after having owned the RS4 to say that the Audi gives you a detached driving feeling compared to the involvement the M5 gives you Don't buy th B5 too new and still to depreciate in value. you know my feelings on the other German marques I remember your reaction to the Z4M when it came out, go and test drive one and see if it's as good as hoped it'd be. I'm sure you'll make the correct decision eventually btw sorry about the phone call on friday, I could hear you but obviously you couldn't hear me. an intermittent fault at my side which seems ok now. |

Lot of talk about M5's here lately....
Graham, you are a mad man and as well as I know you the only car that can keep up with your sensation seeking needs is the M5....BUT the RS4 is a car that can easily out whittle the capabilities of the E39. Now if we were discussing E60 model then that's a different kettle of fish and I'm sure here the bavarian marque would leave 4rings in a tizzy. In my opinion, forget buying any of the above and concentrate on getting a Gallardo Tiko |

Another wildcard: Don't sell it Knowing how much you like your ///M5's, selling it will only make you yearn for another as soon as you have sold it. keep the beast shackled to YOUR keyring

By chance I've got someone out here who wants to buy the e39M5 which means I have to think of something else to fill the potensil hole. So far the options are:- Porsche Cayman - very capable but just didn't have the feeling of thrust if you know what I mean. BMW Z4M Coupe - haven't tested it yet but I know I'd like it. Mercedes - I went to the dealer but I felt dirty and had to leave. Audi RS4 - My kind of motor too no test drive yet but I've been in one and its plenty fast with that low down torque grunt. Wild card - BMW have a two year old Alpina B5 with delivery milage on it for the same price as the above. Tested it briefly last night but was slightly underwhelmed as with 500bhp and 500 lbft I was expecting to come away without any kidneys but because its such a luxurious car it didn't feel fast in that M car kind of way. Anyway what to get? The thought of a B5 sounds ace but I can't help feeling that a Z4M is going to be more of a drive it like you stole it type of motoring. The RS4 would be great too but its not a BMW and I'm afraid that without prescription drugs my body will reject it cause I don't have the same DNA, kind of like having an organ transplant fail. |
