My e34 525 M20 averages 24-26 depending on how often I get stuck in traffic.

Although it has just had the gearbox oil changed (first time in at least 6 years!) so it might do more now...

Typically it is 400-420 per tank (approx 75 litres)

Exharper, I've been thinking about LPG too - but you must do a hell of a lot of miles to save 2k in the first year in a 523!  Or have you found a cheap source of LPG conversions?

I've got the same issues with my 530i sport. I have had the car 12 days and have spent £250 in fuel. I filled it with shell v-max £72, and managed 222 miles. The trip compuiter tells me I'm averaging 16.9mpg.

I now feather the throttle and try to drive economically, keeping the mpg metre as close to 50 as possible but it's still the same. It's done 90k miles, 'apparently' just been serviced and seems to drive perfectly. I'm at a loss guys, any ideas ??

I've got a 528i and driving around Glasgow on a daily basis i've seen the MPG as low as 12. At that point I started walking! The best i've seen it is 38 and thats motorway driving. At the moment driving around in the country roads its at 27MPG. Its not too bad considering the weight of it! If fuel prices were lower we wouldnt have to worry so much...but I guess thats what we have been forced into. Why have there been no sign of protests regarding the recent fuel price hike?

My E39 525i only gets 17mpg around town. 35 mpg on a easy run in the country.

MPG is fuel consumption???

Do you mean the needle in relationship to the computer?

The needle is instantaneous whereas the trip computer records an average until you reset it- therefore the computer shows an average result of what the needle displays!

just a quick one also....does the fuel consumption actully go up and down if the mpg goes up and down?or is it just there for a extra?

my MPG reading from tonight, 70 mile trip through to Stirling and back ... i went via the Balloch to Stirling road, for them that don't know this road then it is quite twisty at bit's, lot's of hard cornering and a lovely long (almost) straight section, ideal for using "step-tronic"

almost half way

then on the way home (nearly home) i managed to find a private test track

average MPH over about 72 mile's was

don't think that's to bad for a big heavy motor

Reset your MPG computer using the stalk and fill the beast up and drive it properly for a couple of days. See what its says then. My 523 does  (says 25.9) and it getts driven hard, it is also a very tired engine with nearly 200K on the cock, so i would expect that you should gt more. My bet is that the meter needs resetting anyway. How much do you get per tank fill. Todays prices you should be looking at 400 miles to 70 quid i reckon, Thats what i get anyway. (well 380ish)

Thinking of an LPG replacement!! i would save the conversion in the first year.... Good luck

my 523i is about 17-21 mpg about town and anything up to 38/40 mpg on motorway drives.

have you tried reseting the display and see how it look's after a few day's?

That is not good.

Are you sure the computer is properly resetting itself, or are you measuring consumption from amount of fuel at the pumps?

I got 25-27 mpg out of my V8 E60 before it got nicked which wasn't much thirstier than my E39 and is much the same as my 3.0i 24V Senator.

I would get a diagnostic check done but before that, give the car a good service, change plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and fill the car up with a full tank of Shell V Power and give it a good run.
