After much deliberation (mostly by her indoors) 'we' have decided the way forward is to buy an MPV in addition to my beloved V8 of course!

We have stumbled across a Ford Galaxy going cheap. The owner says the reason for the low price is the fact it's far from A1. It's a 1998 2.8 V6 Si with only 88,000 on the clock. The defective parts they list are : electric windows and mirrors not working, and some dents and scratches to the front wings as well as in need of a lot of cleaning inside. They also say the radiator and water pump have been replaced but still has leaks which are probably due to hoses? As far as we can tell, that is it. In my eye (as a fairly competent DIY mechanic and someone who has been in the motor trade for 12 years) it looks to me like the seller doesn't know what he is selling. In his own words "I have no mechanical knowlege in any way at all what-so-ever"

Anyway, cut to the chase, my query is, does anyone know of any common faults with the Ford 2.8 V6 lump? The cosmetics I can live with and repair at a later date and hoses does by no means stretch my mechanical knowlege. The windows and mirrors to me sounds like a possible control module or wiring but the sunroof and rear windows work so am not totally fussed either. I just cannot believe the low price! If anyone has any knowlege/experience with these vehicles or engines I'd appreiciate some pointers.

P.S. Telling me "NO" because it's not a BM is not an option, like I said, it's for my wife so I don't want to buy her a pig!

Many thanks chaps!

Mike

Auto or manual??

Auto's give trouble I believe.

V6 should be good.  Might have a drink problem though.

I think you will find that this engine is actually the narrow angle V6 from VW as first introduced in the MKIII Golf VR6 and later in the Corrado VR6 in 2.9 guise. Not the old weezy 'Cologne' V6 from Ford.

I was of the impression that  the Ford 2.8 V6 lump was a very strong one and that the Galaxy was one of Ford's better vehicles.

Cheers for the feedback guys, most useful. I have found a few bargains, some of which need work but I'm happy to go for a cheap one with some minor mechanical defects as It's cheaper for me to fix it myself than pay the extra money for a better car. Looks like Galaxy is the way to go though I did see a very clean V6 Espace with 97,000 on the clock, sevice history and for only 500! Gone of course!

The search continues.........

Mike
