The DVLA will not issue a UK license outside of the UK. SMWBO mislaid hers when we were in Malaysia and she called to order a new one and was told that they could only be issued to a vaild UK address. Thankfully she thought on her feet and said we were only there on hols and promptly gave my sisters address - which is our principle UK address.

I think the reason the DVLA are so strict is poss something to do with the fact that the driving licence always seemed regarded as proof of ID in the UK.

In France you used to be required to change licence within 12 months but it was challenged a few years back by an old duffer who didn't want to lose some of his entitlements in the transfer. Our UK licences are accepted by our French insurers, though they insisted the cars had French MOT immediately and change of registration within a year.

IIRC dependant on the severity of the charge I believe there is an insistance that you change to the local licence so that they can apply the points(In France)????

The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think.

My uncle has lived in GB for the best part of 20 years now, but still uses an Irish license; he gets it renewed here when he needs to, and the local license authority has no issues about posting it to GB for him.

Thanks for all you replies. I was doing 81 in a 70 zone.

It looks like a summons and I imagine I'll get a much bigger fine than the standard Ł60.  If I go to court and get fined, does that mean I have a criminal record?

The actual issuing of a licence changed sometime between Febuary 1997 (they issued me a paper one ) and Febuary 2000 (they insisted I had a photocard one ).

After you pass a DSA test, your entitlement to drive/ride/whatever lasts until you are 70 (unless you have one of the medical conditions they dissaprove of) but your photocard licence only lasts for 10 years, as they wish you to update the picture every 10 years.

If you have a medical condition they will restrict your actual entitlement to drive, not just your licence valid time, to whatever number of years pops into their mind at that time.

I've had one year licences, now I have a three year licence.

They will also remove entitlements (catergorys of vehicle you are allowed to drive) depending on what they had for brekfast that morning.

By actually removing your entitlement to drive after a period of time, they can & do force you to accept whatever eurocrap has  been dreamt up since you last renewed, for example I had to sell my landrover in Febuary 2000, as someone decided I was limited to 8 seated vehicles or less, and I'm forbidden to meet the requirements that new licence holders need to drive that vehicle, they also removed my then HGV 3, but they did that in 1995.

You do not have to take any kind of test to prove you can drive any type of vehicle, if renewing on medical grounds, just take a medical.

And I'm sure all of this will have changed by 2009 when I'm due to renew again, everytime I have to renew something is different.

Best Wishes

Nigel

UK licences also last for 10 years (the photocard ones, which is all they will issue now).

I was wondering that.
However, Irissh licences last up to 10 years unlike the UK licences.

Dave

Could I ask you to actually read the thread here : http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?t=970& ;start=15 as there is potential for you to be in deep water if you've been resident here for more than three years.

IF you have been resident here for more than three years can I suggest you are very careful who you actually ask in person for advice, as no matter how helpful anyone wants to be, you'd put a Police officer in a very difficult position.

It'd be an awful shame if you ended up in trouble for what is a quite minor offence ( I say quite minor, as I don't actually know what speed you were doing in what limit).

Good luck

Best Wishes

Here we go, this chap uses the name Vonhosen to post.

He is the dogs danglies in these matters, and a very helpful chap.

his post :

If you are a resident & have a valid community car licence, this will authorise you to drive a car in GB (provided your licence remains valid) until you reach 70 years of age or for three years after becoming resident, whichever is the longer period.

Alternatively, you can exchange your licence for a British one at any time.

You can't enter the FPN system at the moment using a community licence. It will have to be a court appearance. Under the Road safety Act that will be changing but not at the moment.

*********

So there you go, when they find out you have a non uk licence I'm afraid it looks like a summons, to save yourself any future grief, please note the three years bit ( I thought it was one year....just shows what I know lol).

I've posted the question here : http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?p=16481#1 6481

Your welcome to keep an eye on the thread, & I'll copy the answers here, if there's no response there, I'll post it on traffic answers.

I think you can be made to change an EU licence to your actual country of residence after a year, but I'm not absolutely sure.

I had an address in France at one stage, although I was actually resident in the UK, I wanted to exchange my british licence for a french one as they treat diabetics much better, ........I got so far then it was refused.

I will ask on the AD/Traffic answers forum for you , and post the response here.

Best Wishes

Nigel
