either crank or cam sensor??  i can't remember

some times when i start my 523 (hot or cold start) it feel's like it's lossing power, i can switch it of, restart drive and it can drive/power up fine is it one of the above sensors that could be causeing my fault?

it feels sluggish, like it's in the wrong gear and struggles slightly to accelarate when the fault kicks in

its sure its the crankshaft sensor mate, see ALSO my post on pressure regulator valve (about 3-4 weeks ago). Hopes these helps.

thank's  it's been faultless this past week but i really need to get is checked proper? going to make some time and get it booked in for a gearbox flush/new fluid so i'll see about getting it on a diagnostic machine to help pin point the problem .... might also save me doing a trial and error of replacing part's that don't need replaced??

Ok then could be both!!! ha ha.

Must admit the crankshaft sensor would cause the car not to start at all, but the loss of power ian explains was definitly fixed by replaceing crankshaft sensor and the pressure regulater. This was allowing air to enter the system (bypassing the MAF). GOOD LUCK!

Where are you taking it for the autobox service?

Are you going  to John Mackie's out at Tollcross in the East end of Glasgow?

It sounds similar to my crankshaft sensor problem but the cam sensor gives similar symptoms.
A diagnosis from Harts will tell you.
Its an easy enough DIY for either sensor

I got my crankshaft sensor recently and it was about €90+VAT so expect it to be about £60 or £70.
Assuming it is this then you will also need 3 little washers for the section that fits around the front/top part of the engine.
The sensor cable runs from in under the inlet manifold around the front top of the engine and then down behind one of the rubber hoses on the front driver side. Its held in with one bolt.
The only difficult part is access at both ends. The hose on the drivers side needs to be held out of the way whilst you open the nut. The oil filter housing lid (36mm) needs to come off so you can reach in under the inlet manifold. Track the existing cable back to find its socket.
The oil pipe banjo nut and engine lifting bracket both need to come out (around thermostat area of engine).

Im just noticing that your 523i is from 2000 so would be the M52TU and not the M52 like mine. I don't know how different the fitting instructions are (if at all).
# 419110030: CRANKSHAFT ANGLE SENSOR M52/54 & M43 ENGINES 09/98 ONWARDS - Crankshaft pickup
This is assuming its your crank and not cam sensor that is dodgy. If it is cam then go for part # 419110240 - CAMSHAFT INLET SENSOR M52 M54 ENGINES 09.98 - Cam pickup sensor
Call your dealer and get a price off them for a sensor - it may not be much off ECP prices

edit: and no you're not a pain in the butt - the forum is here for queries like this!

anyway they have ordered me a new sensor which i'll have to wait till friday to be fitted (to busy at work)

figers crossed that, thats the fault

Did the sensor fix the issue?

I have a similar problem. I have replaced MAF and Cam shaft pos sensor, Eurocar part: 419110160 (Camshaft pulse sensor, just under the Vanos solenoid). When I do a Carsoft diagnosis on it it still fails the Cam sensor: Error 65  Camshaft angle pulse generator. Both the old and new pulse sensors do not read any resistance between pins 1 and 2, is this correct... ? Any ideas? Car is doing much the same as described in this posting. A little hesitant, somtimes clears and runs smoothly. Seems to like a thrash down the motorway, doesn't like traffic jams... then again neither do I !

Any help would be much appreciated.
