It is the board thats gone in my e34, apparently due to moisture getting into the dash from somewhere and frying the circuit. I hope Hartlake can find the source of the problem otherwise I fear I'll be buying yet another board due to water damage. I hope you guys get your probs sorted out Thanks West ------------------- e34 525 sport ------------------- |

My E34 M5 has had intermittent problems since I bought it a couple of months ago. It's gone completely dead once, the speedo has suddenly flicked to around 60mph and back to zero while stationery, and now the oil temp gauge doesn't move. Most of the time it's fine though.

Mine has been playing all sorts of tricks like:-
Dash completely dead
Speedo & tacho reading only 10-20% sometimes
Infinate variation of LED backlights stay on when ignition turned off, or come on in the night by themselves.
Chime sometimes stays on or comes on in the night
Display reads Code miles/km
Coding plug serial # reads 00000
Trip meter resets to 0
I have changed the capacitors on the board which didn't make any difference, have discovered that when dash is completely dead if I pull fuse 20 & replace it, it comes back to life. Came to the conclusion I need a new circuit board but didn't want to spend a fortune & find its still the same. Think I will also try Hartlake £110 sounds very reasonable.

Thanks ajackson
I am getting a brake lining warning on the dash, the car is in having a elctrical diagnostic at the moment so fingers crossed its not the SI board. Thanks West |

It might not be the SI board. I had exactly the same problem as described (dead speedo, trip and mileometer), however the Rev Counter and all other lights on the main panel were fine. It turned out to be the speed sensor in the rear wheel hub was at fault due to a badly worn wheel bearing. Everything replaced nicely under warranty, so you might want to check this out as well if you are getting a correspondiong "Check Brakes" on your on-board computer. AJ |

thanks for that Sohlman, I took your advice and spoke to both Phil and Peter at Hartlake (very friendly and helpful) and they'll do it for £85 + £25 labour which is excellent value considering at my local BMW dealer the board alone is £330 +vat.
I'm having a diognostic check on the car (£28+vat) just to confirm it is the board. Thanks again West |

Found this page when researching the problem, if its any help, or otherwise I guess I'll need to investigate replacing the SI Board, thanks. Iain http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/maintenance/electrical/capacitors.htm

This is a very common fault on an e34 and it's your SI Board. Definantly not the ECU. Bassically the circuit board in places has broken the electrical connection resulting in a loss of power to your guages. Generally goes intermittant before it completely goes. Had the same happen on our e34 530 5 years back. Went to Hartlake and they replaced with a reconditioned board in exchange for the old board. They then adjusted the new boards millage to the old boards and it's been fine since. BMW will charge you around £600 for a new one, but a reconditioned one will be about £80 - 150 depending on what you need. I would not get one from a breakers as it could be no better than your old board. Phil at Hartlake fixes them himself and offers a 1-2 year guarantee (Can't remember which). New ones have a life exspectancy of about 6 years and our reconditioned one is 5 years old and is still fine. Contact phil on 01474 326626. Hope this helps.

surely the car would have all manner of problems if the ECU is faulty and requires replacing??
I was hoping it would be a lose connection on the back of the dash or some thing similar. West |

I am having very similar problems with my e34 535i SE, I suspect that a new computer/ECU or similar may ultimately be required, but am hopeful an easier/cheaper fix can be found before I go to BMW.

Hi guys,
Well, started my e34 525 up on saturday morning to discover that all the dials on the dash have stopped working. The digital display, lights etc still work its just the dials - which is really handy when you live in in a part of the country covered with gatso's and you've no idea what speed your doing or how much fuel you have! I've checked the fuses which are ok, I was hoping someone could shed some light on this problem before I get nicked for speeding !! Thanks in advance West ---------------- e34 525 sport ---------------- |
