I know that Porsche Club GB run an independent trip every year to Le Mans, is there a BMW equivalent?

It depends on what you mean by a 'Trip' as about the ony way one can run a collective trip to a venue such as le Mans is by coach!  The BMWCC is as diverse as its members, so it is very difficult to 'run' an event for more than a few people who know each other.

Le Mans is easy to reach from any Channel port, with tickets and camping permits available from Just Tickets of Folkestone on 01304-228866.  It's closer for most people than driving from Plymouth to Manchester, so just go!

I realise that many people like the idea of joining a 'convoy', but lots of cars following each other's number plates is a recipe for boredom and probable disaster, not to mention catching the attention of the gendarmerie. Those who have never driven in Europe before would be well advised to begin by following someone who is experienced, but it's really easy enough.

Another problem is that we do not all have lots of spare money to spend.  For example, I will be camping there and back, as le Mans is but one piece of a series of European trips throughout the year, and it helps to keep costs down, not that camping is at all a penance - if you know what you are doing, and have the right equipment.

Once at le Mans, camping is the only way to go, as this enables one to be there for the full 24 hours.  This year we will be camping on the circuit at Tetre Rouge, about 300 metres from the track, an experience which is hard to beat.

If you would like to meet up en route, or at the circuit, let me know, and I'll email a copy of our route.

Just a thought - wouldn't it be better if people on this forum used their names, instead of hiding behind cryptic titles?

a trip is trying to be organised via the Alpina registrar of the club, he goes every year so like quite a few, knows the lie of the land very well. Give him a call (numbers in the mag) It's good if you can get a few to travel together, meet up en-route, a good run down, adds to the camoraderie!

I have also got 2003 from Just Tickets, they were excellent last year and just as good for next year.

I agree that the idea of trying to arrange a "trip" for a lot of people is out of the question, I was networked in on the Porsche trip they organised 2002 and the poor guy who arranged it must have spent all his spare time on it, but is it out of the question for any BMW owners who are making the trip to arrange a get together say at the pit walk on the Friday and then all have a few beers afterwards??

Camping is the only way to go and 2003 we are at Campsite Houx, we plan to travel on the Thursday stay over on route and get to the track lunchtime Friday.

I come over from Ireland to go to Le Mans (well fly to heathrow then join my mate in his 328i for the trip down) and would welcome any sort of get together for a nights craic while there, so if any of you are keen just let me know and let's see what can be arranged.

Next year will be my 11th - I have always gone in convoy with 4or 5 friends as its easy to manage - we do Portsmouth LeHavre.

Camping is great fun and I can recommend it - either Houx or Garage bleu.  I am afraid I gave that up a few years ago and stay outside the circuit now -  at St Leonard de Bois; partly as I ended up getting involved with the Classic Calvalcade which bases itself there for the weekend.

but for those drivers out there I can recommend the drive - perhaps in convoy with a couple of mates, adds a bit of fun - there's some great roads to drive and you needn't take the shortest route.. the gendamerie are only concerned with speeding in the towns and villages - outside of those its who dares wins.. if you're in a left-hand drive you'll have an advantage - right hand drive and you need a co-pilot (you trust) for overtaking.

When you're there, you can drive around the outside of the circuit all weekend and through the night to get to Arnage or Mulsanne or wherever takes you.

Theres some easy going racing on the way home if you're up for it... unofficial of course.
