Since I've pretty much certainly sold my E30 325i SE to a very enthusaistic chap who is coming to view and most likely purchase at the weekend, I have been looking around for a Mazda MX5 series 1 car.

Knowing how good this board/site has been for "newbie" owners (along with E30Zone and E36coupe), I decided to post some questions and see what was on offer on the MX5oc site...
1) almost zilch for sale
2) what is there is well "optimisticaly" priced
3) the owner of the one car I could be interested in, is just being a dick when it comes to sending me pictures and info...and he is moaning that he can't sell his car!!

Haysey: I am sticking with BMW...I'm keeping my M3

Rhys: not yet...watch this space ;)

thepits: I have considered it, but for some reason the only cars that really interest me are either a MX5 or a RX7 Turbo 2 convertible...

Well, actually, if I could find a Reliant SS1 1800T to have a look at, then I might consider it, ugly as it is...
Or a Suzuki Cappuccino if I could get a definitive answer if it was possible to de-restrict them!

Suzuki + Cappucino? Never mix drinking & driving....

Have you seen one up close, they're only about two foot wide?? You got a narrow driveway??

If you want a mk1 MX5 buy a Eunos import. Cheaper and a better spec.

I can't stand this crap some sellers come out with about not really wanting to let the car go etc. If you don't want to sell it don't waste peoples time.

Reliant SS1 1800T !?!!????

Why?

Eunos may be "better" spec...so long as your version of better also means heavier (aircon, electric everything, leathers, etc) which isn't strictly necessary as far as I'm concerned....
Insurance isn't quite as easy, either...

The SS1 1800T may look pig ugly, but it is a decent car with astonishing performance (170bhp in a 600Kg chassis!) and has a certain collectors quality...evident by me not being able to find one anywhere in the country for sale!!

Suzuki Caps. may be narrow, but they also aren't a bad little sports car...
I've driven all 3 at some point (only the SS1 I drove was a 1600 non-turbo version) and they all fit the bill of a small-ish 2-seater convertable with rwd and decent performance...

But I think I may expand my search to look at RX7 turbo 2 convertables cos I can't seem to find what I wnat at a price that I can afford and the RX7s seem to go for peanuts!

Are they the ones that've got rotary engines?

Yes and the reason why they go for peanuts is that they need engine rebuilds with alarming regularity. They can need doing after 40k but 70k is supposed to be the absolute most the engine will do. So when buying one you need to add the cost of a rebuild into the price.

Derek: They are rotary, yes...Twin chamber on those

Peter: I've had a series 1 RX7 before...that managed around 100K on the original seals...bit smokey, but ran OK...I live very near Rotechniks who are probably the leading specialist in these motors, but I am pretty competent mechanically and am not afraid of a bit of servicing

I know the motors have seal longevity problems, but the new materials tend to be better and I think 40K is very pessimistic for an engine...
Still...<1K for a decent convertable Turbo model can't be bad...even if it needs a whole new motor, it is still a cheap performance car!
