Having written off my E30 last Thursday following someone driving too quickly behind me, I am in the market for a new one.  I have just seen an 86 320 for sale.  The present owner says it does not have central locking or power sterring (I was expecting the latter from the pre-face lift model).

Could anyone give me a quick idea as too what the spec of this car is.  What are the major differences between my 91 320SE and this 86 320.

HI MATE

my mate had a 86 320,this was a pretty basic spec car,no electric windows,no power steering,no on board computer,quartz clock(not digital),manual sunroof...pretty basic in all aspects.

if your after power steering, electric windows, etc, try the 325 (higher spec)around that age.

hope that helped a bit.

power steering/central locking would have been standard on the SE only I think, the rest of the range having them as options only (everything was an option then, as the car even came without a radio, you had to specify one)

Personally I would look for a post 87 model as these were the face lift cars with better specs etc, the 325 would be the choice if I could find a decent one that hasn't been messed with (I really want my old one back)

Have you driven it at all?

Nick,

I have a 1986 320i se.  All i can tell you is that it came fitted with electric windows and central locking... and thats it.  No PAS. I should imagine the car in question is a standard 320. Obviously its hard to work out what exactly a standard 320 comes with because so many people choose to get aditional extras when they first buy the car.

The main differences are as follows: -

powertrain difference is that the later 320's, after 1987 ran on motronic  rather than l jetronic injection.  And lookswise, the earlier one will not have elipsoide lights (although these are easy to swap over).  The front lower panel will have the larger fog lamps in (again these valances can i belive be swapped).  The bumpers will be chromed.  The rear lights and tailgate section are completely different.   Early lights won't fit a facelifted car and vice versa.  And thats about it.  If you still have your 91 car there would be no harm and little effort to use any of those bits to upgrade the 86 320 if you decide to buy it.  The engine head suspension are the same.  The only difference being that the later gearbox will have tdc sensors in for the motronic engine management.

Hope this helps,

james
