Im in tanworth in arden warwickshire, and i need help! I have 2 snapped rocker arms in my 87 528i, so I have gotta pull the head, fix them, then install new gasketry and put it all back together, now ive never done anything this complex before and im concerned that it will never run again! so if anyone, or a group or whatever wants to come round and help me, i have plenty of food, drinks and space so everyones welcome! thanks, Alex.

Hello

I've an 88, but mines the E34.

Are you sure you want to do this ?

As far as I'm aware ( I'm no mechanic, just a keen diyer), you are going to need the head skimmed before you re-fit it.

This is the kind of job I used to tackle with my father, who is unfortunately dead now.

Do you have all the info ?, torques etc, do you have someone who can skim the head ?, are you ok with fitting the cam belt again, lining it all up etc ?

Your only about 50 miles away from me, I'd be more than happy to help you if I can, but I'm not clever enough to be the "leader".

Best Wishes

Nigel

Nigel, the 528 engine will be fitted with a cam chain, so how to do that will be testing. I ended up finding another engine but still have my old engine here at home which was still a runner but had blown h/g

i have been told by a mechanic that the head should not require any work, as its not coming off due to HGF its not warped, so as long as i get any remnants of old gasket off carefully it should be fine if i use a new gasket on refitting and torque everything correctly, the main thing that im not sure about how to do correctly is removing the intake manifold, or wether it even has to be removed or can come out with the head, its things like that i need guidance on!

Both manifolds would have to come off and the exhaust manifold will be a pig!! Good luck mate!

There you go, told you I was dangerous lol.

I assumed yours was an M20 engine, as mine is, its only a year newer than yours, and I thought the early E34's shared the M20 engine with the E28's, until it was replaced with the cam chain M50 engine.

I'm still willing to help, just not to be trusted to lead

As far as I'm aware, and this sort of information largely comes from people like my late father, the head will still need to be skimmed, it doesn't matter why you remove it, once you remove an alloy head, it should be skimmed.

He had a dolomite sprint in the 70's too, I remember it used to "blow" the electrodes back up inside the spark plugs.

Lets hope someone clever will lead us in this little project, it would be good if we could actually pull something like this off, a sort of central region "big job" hit squad.

Best Wishes

Nigel

Nigel,

He has the M30 lump, not the M50 mate, so its still 12v but with cam chain (the big six). You are right with what you say about the 520/525 being the M20 until 1991.
