Having gone through previous posts, this seems to be quite a common fault, but no one has posted what the solution was!

My remote centre locking key is not working and nor are the interior lights apart from the two front map reading lights. Key works fine in door. I've tried recoding the key (open window, lock door, open door, turn ignition on and off quickly then press combination on remote) but to no avail.

Any idea what it is / what the fix is? Supplying dealer has offered to take a look at it for me - but he's 240 miles away!

P.S.

It's a 2001 E39 so is a recharging key.

Thanks

Ben

Hi,

Just got a call from my sister this morning with a similar problem. She pushes the button and only the back doors unlock???? Tried it several times and the turned the key in lock and doors open fine. Its a 525 02 msport.

Any Ideas would be great.

Mick

Cheers

Ben & Mick, first thing to check is the condition of the battery - I mean the one in the car, not the key.  My old E34 had this problem when I first bought it, random different doors unlocking when using the remote, but fine when using the key in the lock... not to mention some other very odd electrical symptoms like full beam headlights turning themselves on and off and check control bringing up all sorts of weird messages, all of which disappeared once I replaced the battery with a new one.  I think batteries only really last about 5 years these days, after that they seem to go downhill fast so I'm expecting to have to replace the one in my "new" E39 2001 530i sport in the next 12 months, which reminds me I must update my signature!
