Anyone got any ideas....

Last couple of times out the car (E34 3.8 M5) runs fine then suddenly stutters with momentary loss of power - while driving.... When this happens the Service light comes on briefly. A quick blip of throttle & she seems to right herself and runs on fine. Apart from this happening three times in the past fortnight it's been running fine with mostly long m/way runs.

I was wondering about dirt in the fuel but couldn't understand why the inspection light would come on. BTW The fuel was around the halfway mark and I'd filled it at the same place I always do.....

could it be an interruption to the main DME power supply? This might  cause the service lights to come on again (as they do every time the ignition is turned on. The main DME relay on a number of BMW models is known to go bad like this, and I think your car may be one (not absolutely certain, I'm a 6er driver myself)

cheers

Local user friendly wrench monkey on way out to collect car, he'll only get it home but at least he knows it's too low to go on his normal tow truck!

We'll have to get it taken to BMW in Bordeaux....bigcry Hope it's not the DME!!

Derek, if you do a search, Killian posted in a link in recent weeks for a pdf copy of the bentley manual for the e34.  It's only about 420kb.  It might be helpful and generally worth having.
