I am new to this forum, having joined the BMWCC last year after buying a very nice 1997 840Ci, but hope someone can help. I acquired a set of official BMW CDs, which included the TIS (Technical Information System) on the understanding that I would be able to find out how to perform any repair/servicing operations I was capable of doing. However, I don't seem to be able to find anything that tells me how to do carry out repairs/removals/replacements. Any experience of the TIS passed on to me would be greatly appreciated.

One instance of using TIS is as follows:
Open TIS - (do not identify vehicle) - Click Graphics - on Graphics click on 02 - On Chassis click on 01 - on Front Axle - click "Document Type" - Click on "Repair Instructions" - this will show a list of repair actions.
It takes a while to find the many ways of exporing TIS.

Thanks, Dave, I'll give that a try. I have always been identifying my vehicle in the belief that this would get me the info relevant only to my vehicle type. Oh well, live and learn.

All the best.

Just had a quick look after opening TIS and there is no graphics option. The only ways to start searching the system are through the 'symptom' or 'document' buttons.

What now?

There may be something missing from your CD. I click on BMW95 which brings up 'Sysadm' or 'TIS' I click on TIS which opens the main window of TIS and initially shows a smaller page on top of the main window headed "Important Information on Using TIS. When I click on "close" this returns to the main window that has on the bottom left hand side three headings - 'Sympton' - 'Graphics' - 'Document'.
If Graphics is missing then you need to reinstall your CD or get a newer one.

I have what appears to be the most current CD version of TIS. The CD label is a genuine BMW one and is dated 01/2005, version 3.4.1. The MS Access database files are all dated 13/08/04 and the .exe file is version 3.4.1.0, dated 17/11/03.

I have appended the start-up screen and the main screen below and, as you will see, there is no sign of a 'graphics' button.

I have browsed through the database file library and there appear to be entries for documents that would seem from their titles to be repair procedures, but how I get the system to display them is a mystery. I have even attempted to open some of them directly from the CD, but although they are in .rtf format, they must be encrypted, as MSWord displays gibberish on opening them.

I have reinstalled the software twice, once by directly accessing the setup file from the disc and once by using sysadm - both give the same result.

HELP!

Sorry Hedgehog, I cannot open the images. Never mind I believe you.
I have already on order a new TIS CD to replace my 2003 version which is due in tomorrow or Wednesday. If that works OK I will let you have my old one.
Keep watching.

Thanks, Dave, I'll look forward to trying that, but I also have an earlier version and that gives the same results and is the reason I obtained the latest one. How would it be if I sent you my latest version for you to try?

hedgehog,
2004 TIS received and no sign of a "Graphics" section compared with my old TIS. However the volume of the old TIS is 430 MB whereas the new TIS is 556MB possible to cover newer models..
At my initial check there appears to be more information on this new TIS as, for instance, it has a full list of Part I,II and Oil Service requirements which I don't remember seeing on my previous one.
On my old TIS I found thermostat renewal in the Graphics section but in the new TIS it appears in the Repair Section.
It would appear you have the newer version. I trust this answers your query?

Dave,

Thanks for the info, but can I be a real pain and ask you to detail the exact steps you took to get to the thermostat renewal? I still cannot find my way to any information, even though I am going through what seems to be the logical route in the menus.

Thanks.

hedgehog,

Sorry about the delay in replying.
Here goes:
1. Identify the vehicle.
2. Click on "Document"
3. This will automatically take you to the next page.
4. Click on "Repair Instructions".
5. Wait whilst this loads the next set of text (on the same page).
6. Click on item "11 Engine (M52TU)".
7. Wait whilst this loads the next set of text (still on the same page).
8. Click on item "53 Thermostat Connections".
9. Still on the same page click on the bottom right hand arrow to take you to the next page.
10. You are there!!!(hopefully).
11. clicking on any of the text within a box will take you to further additional information.
12. If you also click on "Repair Instructions" on the right hand side of the page and click to go to the next page, this will list the precautions you should take, bleeding the system, fan removal, etc. This also contains information regarding the patent hose connections.

Good Luck
Dave E

Dave,

Thanks for the procedure. It turns out I am following the same route as you and I can get to similar information for my 8-series on the thermostat. However, when I (for instance) look for the adjustment procedure for headlight aim, I get to a page that shows the proper set-up/end result, but not the location of the adjusters or how to operate them. This is similar for all sorts of other operations and I suppose I have to assume that the information is not on the disc for some reason.

If you are interested, you will see what I mean if you enter my VIN (CC66905) and try to get information on lighting, body, etc.

Thanks for your patience and assistance though and I guess I'll have to find other sources of information.

Hi hedgehog,

The TIS can be very time consuming if you have to try the various routes of information, which includes retracing your steps to try another route. I try to note down my various routes to enable me to remember which route was a dead end for the particular information I was seeking. For instance I found the graphic instructions regarding adjusting your lights for the correct headlight aim. There is a box within this that directs you to the end result that you found. Don't ask me to find it again as I did not record my route because I had been trying so many.
There is also a piece on how to blank out part of the headlight glass when travelling from a RH drive area to a LH drive area. This is not necessasry on Zenon as the particulat handbook explains.
Good luck in your searches.

Thanks, Dave. It seems patience and perseverance will have to become my virtues.
