Yup I can concur with that. I always tell people that the Leda's are great but you have to be able to live with their little "features" for road use. Do it right and do it once, go with Leda.

By the way I have absolutely no intention of going to Motec or any other rinky dinky set up. Car goes on a diet once my escort is finished, with a nice little cage to boot.

LOL, I knew it would happen as soon as I saw your other car.

As Jon said. I think most of us would be better off trying to become better drivers with decent suspension set ups as that would be better for the lap times that we don't do at trackdays than a few more bhp.
I remember at Brands and that poor old DTM car not being able to catch Roops.
He was certainly keeping him honest!!!!

It's a Mk2 RS2000, my old race car. I have pretty much rebuilt most of it. Lots of nice fibre glass panels, no interior, cage etc etc.

Only problem at the moment is that it's a real git to start (compression ratio of 13:1 doesn't help....) In fact it won't start at all. So I am looking a gear reduction starters etc etc to try and make it usable - if that doesn't cut it I may sling an S14 in it and throw the Pinto away.....

Holiest sh*t, Roops. You will have to bring it to the track if the S14 goes in. So...is it faster on a given lap than your M3? Can't be.

No I don't think it is. It has the potential to be,as it has all the right bits Quaife straight cut four speed box, silly low diff ratio, Leda'etc etc. But it's a lot harder to drive than the M3. Around Brands on the old circuit it would turn 57's fairly easily. I can lap brands in about 58's in the M3 but the circuit is much slower now since they altered Graham Hill bend. That used to be nearly flat if you had a good car and strong underpants !!!! Now you have to stop and turn for it. it certainly would be great with an S14 in it, as the weight advantage is about 100lbs straight away and then you have got the added BHP. I have another engine for it, which comprises a Cosworth block, Rods and custom forged pistons. I was thinking of building another engine but it may be cheaper to go the S14 route, it would also be loads easier to start !!!!!!

Re your starting problem - I used to rally a Mk2 with a pinto in it and it was a bugger to start. In the end we fitted 2 batteries in line (i.e. 24 volt) and that worked a treat.

It started every time, even when really hot. Obvious down side was the extra weight.

I have sort of used that approach for a bit and it kind of works, but I am going to try a gear reduction starter motor before I lose my patience and drop the S14 lump into it...making it and RS14......

The S14 is a pig to fit to a Ford.. I tried it with my westy and gave up.

... I have a nice little 4AGE on a pallet in my shed if you are interested... a lot of aussie racers use toyota power in their escorts.

Ok..

.. I had no problems at all starting it up even when it was hot.. cranked about three times then fired.

Roop's Pinto has too much advance..
he needs two settings on his dizzy... slacken it off, reduce the advance, start the engine, increase the advance.. tighten it up... easy! even with a 170 bhp high comp crossflow.

is that alright doc?

Your'e right Nick. It blows back when it's not cranking over fast enough. I have retarded it a bit to see if I can get it too start, but one of the major issues is generating enough cranking speed to get the engine to draw petrol through the carbs, into manifold and then into the engine. Hopefully, the gear reduction starter will do the trick.

Roops, that sounds like my BMW racing bike! We had to "inject" some petrol straight into the carbs with a plastic bottle before firing it up. Not very save in terms of backfiring......
