Topic: Good BMW independant needed! Posted: 09-January-2006 at 08:53 |
Hello again everyone!
I'm currently looking for a good BMW independant to do some work on my 89 635csi Highline, namely sorting out an exhaust 'manifold' blow, prior to attending a rolling road next month (organised by James Sohl aka 'Sohlman'). I get a ticking sound which rises & falls with revs, its been confirmed as being EITHER, cracked manifold, failed stud(s), blown manifold gasket......... Doing this job on an M30 (as some of you will know from experience) is a RFPITA so I'm told, especially as if a stud is broken or gets broken, the head has to be removed - lots of lovely garage labour......!! i.e. about a GRAND+ Hence, my post. I'm looking for a good BMW independant who will do their utmost to solve this problem, WITHOUT breaking any studs, unless of course some are already broken. There seem to be loads of BMW independants down 'sowf', but not that many in my area, namely south Bham/north Worcestershire. I'm sure others would find a listing of BMW independants useful as well, even more so if people submit 'theirs' based on use & therefore recommendations. Just a thought guys & any help appreciated! |

Don't know of anyone in your area mate. My guy could do it mind you, but you would have to travel to Dorking. I drop the car off with him and then go for a round of Golf. When i return the car is done James |

Thanks James!
I found a link on dealers/indies on unixnerds' website, with comments. So, I've just been talking to Paul of Bmw Euroservice up in Wolverhampton, in connection with my ticking emanating from the exhaust 'manifold area'. He agreed that it is either; broken stud, cracked manifold or failed gasket. Another possibility could be a leak from one of the two downpipes, but more likely one of the first three points. I'm going to check to see if I can find/feel any leaks before further attempts at removing the manifold nuts, likewise any cracks or absent nut/studs..... Paul said that its a right bugger on the later Highline engine, space is just so tight, especially with the master cylinder where it is. He also warned that even if I/he get the nuts off without breaking a stud, he said it wouldn't be the first time a stud has broken upon being re-torqued, BUT, they can change a broken stud with the head in-situ!!! Wahey! If I break a stud doing this at home it will be an absolute nightmare, almost certainly requiring the head to come off etc Most of the other specialists I've spoken to said they remove heads to change studs...... Think I'll probably be leaving this job to a pro.........££££ |

If it's a cracked manifold it's good excuse to get a Fritz Bitz 6 branch manifold!
Hope you get it sorted with minimum hassle. |
