An excellent write-up is here: http://home.earthlink.net/~frankie66/cars-bmw_diy_rearshockm ounts.html The most important thing to note is that you do not need to remove the wheels to swap your rear shocks out. Jack the car (one side at a time), make sure it's well supported with the wheel just touching the ground, then the shock removal is very easy (sub-30mins for the whole job).
