Hi 2 topics in a week: excuse my newbie exuberance!! I was looking originally for a leather interior but bought a 636csi with blue-checked cloth -- mostly because cloth was mint, and replacement leather interiors seem reasonably cheap anyhow, if one was wanted.

The front seats were out of older 535, and not checked. So I secured 2 ,matching blue-checked front seats and drove 70 miles or so to pick them up. Guy claimed the blue-checked interior was "M6" (?)

I have the Walton book, and Ultimate portfolio and Model price list from 84/85, but can't seem to confirm what interior matches/extends to what model.

Anymore know more on model match/interior match?? Ta, Graeme.

If you still want a complete leather interior, send a PM to "UKDaveJ" - he's got two-and-a-bit sets which his wife has dropped heavy hints about getting rid of....

Sounds intriguing. The leather can be nice; but looked at a few where the leather seats looked more like old armchairs but were no way as comfortable. Ouch! The blue checkeds have that Recaro-firmness; but I just wonder if they've got an "model" value as such. Not that I worry on the value; but just the match seems intriguing, and they do go well with the Cosmo Blue exterior!

PS: am I right in assuming that the "velour" interiors I see in some are universally considered "not first choice" by those out here? No offence to the velour-lovers among us, of course!

There were two main leather variations: "comfort" (which = standard leather), and "sports" (which had a couple more adjustment knobs, God only knows what for).

Then there was the Recaro thing. I've seen the "sports" leather seats labelled as "Recaro", but I'm not entirely sure they were one and the same thing...

I've driven on velour before (my recently-sold Ro80 has it, and my long-sold Audi 90 CD had it) - like leather, it's OK so long as you don't wear shorts on it , but it also itched terribly in the increasingly-hot summers we now seem to be having.

You mention "Recaro-firmness" on your current set. That may well be because the seat squab springs and stuffing haven't sagged...yet.

I think "UKDaveJ" also has a velour set.....but it's in green..... Not sure it would "go" with your car, but you never know

This is interesting -- I see the seat hardware (ie: plastic knobs) varies slightly between examples, and with different (occasional a little esoteric) functions. ;-)

The leather differences seem interesting in that, if I'd not speaking too "novice" here, there seems to be some distinct developments from one year to next. I'm looking for a couple of pieces of the plastic hardware for the upper parts of my current seats at present, but no doubt that's something to mention in a different part of the Forum, I guess. G.

Which parts? Are they the little black discs which you push to release the headrests?

I'm actually in need of the knobs on the sides and the surounds to the slides on the sides of the uprights. Just a couple.

I think originally you could have any seats in any model if you wanted, but the main variations were;

'comfort' (flattish)

'sports'  (more figure hugging, and actually made by recaro so far as I know)

'recaro' (as above, but differences to mountings and badged up)

'electric' ( not common on pre '87 UK 6ers, but a theoretical option)

the latter two are nearly always leather so far as I know. The first two come as standard on UK 6ers, cost option for leather versions.

When you come to buy rear trim, you have the thorny 'rear headrest- or not ?' issue to deal with as well. Thankfully there are no major variations in rear seats themselves, its just leather or not so far as I know...

Some people have fitted 3-series 3-door front seats, having fiddled with the mountings, and this can look OK as they have the tilt built in. I believe it is also possible to fit the tilt to some 5-series front seats if you really want to.

The really good news is that with the exception of an unknown (to me at any rate) amount of pigging about with door trims, you can fit any interior into your 6er, from 1976 to 1990 should you have a whim so to do....  I plan to fit an early black leather recaro seat set to my '85 project car, could look really nice...

cheers

Thanks Brucey. Sounds like I have "sports", based on your comments and previous ones. Intrigued by the strong blue-check pattern, centre strips on seats. Looks sporty, which I guess made sense from start for the 6; and includes checked door cards. The ones I dragged out had electric fittings, but didn't seem to do anything and certainly didn't do much "tipping forward" which sure seems more than an added luxury when trying to get people into back seat! The new ones, in addition to matching the rear pattern, seem to tip and behave generally as they should. . . . Now if I could just find the final few bits of plastic for the sides of them! ;-)

Just to clarify. early sports seats were made by Recaro and have larger bolsters and are the most confortable seats out there. Sixes up to 1984 for sure had these seats. After this point BMW developed there own sports seat which is not quite as confortable and was common on all models certainly from 9/85 onwards.

Ta. Mine's a B-reg; so I assume, on this basis, Recaro might be the link? PS: Southern coupe Organiser? How close is this to the IOW?
