Topic: ’John from Munich’ at the Ring Posted: 19-September-2005 at 05:34 |
After having had some email chats with Uwe about tuning the M3 and having read some of the comments on 'John from Munich' and his car I just had to meet this guy and his car. So no matter what, last weekend I had to be at the Ring and meet him. After I had my lap with Kevin in the Cecotto, I got out at the gates as Kevin went for another lap. I decided to just wait for the other cars in line to leave the circuit. In the back I spotted this red M3. As it got closer to the gates I approached the driver and asked him if he happened to be 'John from Munich'. On my question if he was going to be out on the circuit all the time or also in the car park he invited me to get in for a lap around the Ring. As we accelerated from the gates I knew coming over to the Ring had been worth it. This was what DTM must have been like (well as close as it can get in a road car). The sound from the Carbon Air intake and the way the engine revved to 8.500 rpm really put a big smile on my face. This is what a M3 should feel like. As we lapped the circuit I am sure not much could keep up with John in his M3. The handling (K&W Variant 2) and brakes (AP 330 mm) really matched the performance of the engine. As for the sound, I can only say half way through the lap I felt the need for ear plugs. After we left the track we talked a little about the possibilities for my car and for sure John knows what he is talking about. I will not allow myself the same budget to build a similar M3, but you do get greedy. Thanks for the experience John. I am really looking forward to this winter. (Click images for larger size).
The best street legal E30 M3 I know!

thanks John for the kind words. My AP discs finally gave up (I think you saw when they were cracked thru to the edge), so I disappeared for about an hour while I went to swap in the new discs. I needed about 4 laps to break them in. The most fun 2 laps of the weekend was driving with a white 993 race prepared cup style car. We were pretty even. Kevin saw us as we came by. It was a pleasure to drive with that guy and we had the same braking and turn in points which makes it a lot easier to be just 1-2 m off someones bumper. I first drafted him and then he was drafting me. Great fun and not always so easy to drive like that with someone.
good luck on your project.
BTW, I do wash the car before a track weekend but I always see pics of my car dirty :)

John is always kind enough to take people out for passenger laps, and it's well worth asking. His car is pretty damn good I have to say. It just shows what a properly sorted M3 is still capable of.

John I sent you back a PM. I dont check PMs much, it is better if you email me (m3pilot AT gmx.de)
ItalianM3, I do have pics of the interior but they are not online. There is not yet a cage in this car. But it is stripped and painted inside with race seats & 6 point belts etc. It is still a street car ;)

You say THIS car. Does this mean there is another M3 like the one I got to know?
