I'm from South Africa. The is's that were brought into this country seem to be similar to the Euro spec, rather than the US spec. There's very limited resources in this country regarding our cars, as it seems mechanics are just starting to scrape the surface on optimising these motors.
I have one myself, in original condition. It has a 2,7l motor pushing out 155kw, normal aspirated. My friend just purchased one, but it came with not the original motor, but a motor from a 525e. I don't have much info, on the differences, but i do know for sure that's it's nowhere near asa fast as mine. He would like to build his engine to as close as, or maybe even faster than mine.
I heard that the 525e bottom end is the same as mine, but it's head is what makes the engine dead. What kind of conversions can we do;ie. can we keep the bottom and replace it with a head similar to mine, or what other options might we have? I have searched the web, and no answer for sure, just keep getting guesses!
