Hey all

Am considering selling my E36 M3 GT (Racing Green) and getting a Z M Roadster. whats the general feeling about this car ? I wasn't a fan of the Z3 and never really considered the "M" though having had a good look round recently was quite impressed - Also I understand that some mods were made on the final few - circa 2001 /2002 does anyone know what these were.

01/02 got the E46 M3 engine at 325bhp as far as I am aware, couldn't get the full house 340 odd as the exhaust wasn't long enough or something.

Admittedly I haven't driven the M variant but the Z3 was a letdown in feel and feedback.

I like the breadvan personally!

My understanding was the Engine was the same, though its an interesting point and ill try and find out. I understood the mods were more minor than the engine, if that is the case, what did the previous ones have? I looked at one the  other day and thought the interior looked SO much better than the Z3 (all the little circular dials did it for me) and looking at it from behind the extra width and double twins set it aside also..... Breadvan ?????

   Far prefer the Conv'  If I change its what il go for, prob in Estoril blue (think thats spelt right )  What do you think il get for My M3 GT (74,000) pretty good nick ??

Looks lovely, Ive been told to get a 2000/2001 model because of the mods that were made to it, though im still trying to find out what they were !!!!! Really want a RH Drive though - and £ for £ they seem great value when you consider what they were new

The late ones definitely did have the E46 M3 engine, and it was indeed limited by the exhaust to 325bhp (although I don't know what date these ran from). Before this they ran the E36 M3 3.2 lump, which will attract the usual worries i.e. Vanos/oil leaks/etc.

I remember Evo magazine ran one as a long term car for a year and absolutely loved. Its a car I would love to own myself.

Jeff Heywood from the club should be able to breathe more light on this car (ZM Coupe) cos he has run one from new in the Club Magazine!! He would know about the newer engine!

I do like the breadvan cos I am told it handles like the E30 M3, spot on and great fun to drive.

I do know from reading other forums that the newer S54 engine has not suffered the same fate as its slighly higher BHP brother in the M3....certainly not in the same numbers.

Ok here we go

Early ones, 699 imported into the country out of 918 (I think) RHD made, S50 engine from the E36 M3 Evo, 321 bhp, No traction control of any kind. Some had cruise control, and all have Aircon as standard. Differences from a standard Z3, different interior dials and seats (heated) uprated suspension, Special M Wheels, which will only fit the M as the axle is narrower on the rear. The position of the number plate was changed to the bootlid rather than the rear bumper, M side grills to the bonnet. Best of all though is the 4 pipes out the back. I could go on with every difference but i wont  

Later ones, only 79 RHD made, E46 M3 S54 Engine 325bhp, DSC as standard, some with cruise control again. Aircon as standard, some interior as the S50 except the speedo dials are Grey and have the M logo on them,black and M Roadster on the S50's, Same wheels but a slightly different colour. The suspension was changed to the Coupe version, It does handle a little better than the S50's.

All the Z3's including the M's benefit from adding a front strut brace as it stiffens the front, the rear brace (called a butt strutt) stiffens the rear, there is also a body brace which runs from the butt strut to the wishbone mounts which further strengthens the car.

By the way did I mention I have an S50? Anyway if you want to know more there are a few sites you can look at with a load of info.

I believe Jeff Hayward's Coupe is an S50.

I have heard of 2 S54's having a problem with the spun shells like the M3, one in this country and one in america (this one punched a hole in the crankcase too, big enough to get both hands in)

Vanos can be a problem on the S50 the same as the M3 evo, but most M roadster's dont seem to do that high a mileage. Coupe's generally tend to have a higher mileage on them, as the Roadster is mainly a summer second car.

Dont blame you . Where do you recommend i look out for a 2001 ZM (besides the ads on the club site) ive been told about pistonheads and top marques - are there any other places you can think of ?

A work mate of mine had a '99 one. He got rid in favour of a 911 carerra 2 - which he kept for a year or so. He's recently gone out and bought himself another ZM (01 or 02 i believe) as he reckons it's much more fun to drive.

Not my cup of tea, but it's still good to have his and mine parked next to each other in the work car park. Another guy here at work with a Scooby is getting sick of being outnumbered by more powerful cars.

One of the better places to look would be the BMW approved site, but you would pay a premium as its a BMW dealer, at least you get 12 months warranty included which can be renewed each year.

Later ZM roadsters are few and far between though, only 79 RHD made remember, not sure how many came into this country out of that number.

If you can find one of the 79 S54 engined ie the latter ones go for a test drive and then make up your mind. I did --I've got one --Sapphire black with Imola red/black interior.

How long did it take you to find it? Is it worth looking to import one, or do you think most of the RHD's would have come here. I saw a 2001 model for £18.5k last week, shame it was in that awful Yellow. When do you think you will go for your next car?
