Women drivers of all ages are the best anyway, so of course they will flourish at advanced driving techniques...probably teach everyone else a thing or to aswell...

Women, on the whole are not good drivers, as far as generalisations of this kind go.

They are a better insurance risk, as although they have many more bumps than men, they are normally silly little car park scrapes that don't result in claims.

If men crash, they generally write at least one of the vehicles off, which costs money.

The big advantage women have is , generally, they just don't have this silly ego problem men suffer from, if my wife was driving a 911 turbo, and a nova out-accelerated her from the lights, nothing would enter her mind regarding this, men... ? I think we all know the answer to that one.

The one area where women fall down is "mechanical sympathy", for example when my wife selects another gear, the car goes faster or slower according to which way she has changed, she has absolutely no idea why this happens, it just does, she was shown when she learnt to drive.

Oil levels, tyre pressures, coolant levels, tyre tread depth, in fact anything other than the air freshener has stopped smelling nice, she has no idea.

She has mastered petrol, but that took a while !

Best Wishes

Nigel

Thank heavens I wasn't the type of driver you portray, Nigel, although I don't disagree with alot of what you say there.

However after driving 44 tonne artics, 38 tonne artics, 17 tonne rigids and goodness knows how many 7.5 tonne vans..aswell as several cars including a Turbo Supra and driving a 5.7 methanol Trans Am on a dragstrip for 8 seasons, I don't feel that I can put myself into the category of most 'women' drivers. I did do my own maintenance on the trucks and the majority of the cars, I also owned and maintained a few motorcycles too, the largest being a 900 Honda. I might only have driven for a mere 25 years in total but only wrote one car off, due to a steering rack failure, and one motorcycle, due to being hit by a drunk driver, I never had any points on the licence when I had it and most of my so-called 'terrified of being a passenger' passengers fell asleep when I drove cos they felt safe with me behind the wheel. I drove both in this country and most of Europe too either in the car or truck and never had any problems whatsoever.

Its probably why when I got my insurance for the modified 3 litre Turbo Supra the premium was £204.50 fully comp with all modifications declared (increased bhp to 298, bailey d/v etc) plus NCB protection, roadside relay and all glass cover, and I was just 33 when I bought it.

So, yes Nigel, there are some crap lady drivers out there, but there are also a few of us who ain't that bad either. Doesn't mean I didn't make mistakes, cos I did as everyone does, but I learned from them and didn't make a habit of making them.

p.s. I have also got several people through their driving test from scratch on trucks and cars too....all passed first time.

Yes, but to be fair some of those are male drivers, we get them too, as I suspect most areas do.

Didn't you know that a huge 4x4 was a pre-requisite for a school run these days?

It's not, but apparently it helps, as it gives a feeling of safety when you leave it parked on the zig zag line outside the school.

Biggest bugbear about 4x4's and schools...

When I operated coaches we had to go and get parties of kids to take away on study trips. Mummy and Daddy were always there to wave the little darlings off and they always insisted on parking their hefferweight 4x4's right outside the school so their darlings didn't struggle with the suitcases that were always too big and had far too much in them for a 5 day trip.. Anyway I digress...slightly...I never ever managed to park the coaches near the school gates due to these aforementioned hefferweight 4x4's so the little darlings had to walk about 100 yards to the coach..followed by sweating mummies and daddies dragging said suitcase and they ALWAYS whinged that the coach was too far away from the school and why couldn't I park it nearer. I just smiled sweetly at them and loaded the cases quietly chuntering under my breath...

Very restrained of you, I'dve smiled sweetly and told them "because some moron parked where I was meant to stop"

Oh Ian..I can be VERY restrained when I really want to. I have, however, let rip more than once with stupid thoughtless parents who park in a silly place and who then complain at having to lug a tonne of suitcase to the coach..I also get them to lift the damn thing into the boot too. I can be very 'polite' when having a go at someone, and I usually make them feel very very stupid too..and all without a single nasty word or raising of my voice

Thats definately the way to do it, despite rumours from "some" on here who think anyone from our generation especially ex military are mindless thugs, unlike the peaceful citizens who put the gent into intensive care for objecting to being abused and having his car hit by stones.......

Ah but Ian don't forget those little darlings who put that man in hospital don't understand how to deal with situations that might need diplomacy or tempers to be held in check or the meaning of respect, like we old farts do. Most have been brought up thinking that money grows on trees, stereos fall out of dashboards and that to swear is the true Queens English.
