Matt

Firstly, about the oil consumption, this may not be unusual for one of these engines.  There are reports here of similar consumption and it is within BMW tolerences I believe.  Its something you'll need to keep an eye on and top up regularly.  Waiting until the light comes on is not good for an engine in my opinion.

The fact that the temp gauge drops a little if you click the climate up a few clicks would again have me looking at the simple stuff like a dodgy thermostat, or at least not getting the more serious options done until it has been investigated further by someone suitably qualified.  Make sure that whoever you use has the ability to hook up to the on board diagnostics to see if there are hints there.

I have checked with BMW about the oil top up when it happened last as it had only recently been serviced and they said that the light goes amber to tell you to top up when it is convenient and red to indicate a more urgent need.

I am going to ask a local guy to take a look if he has the equipment otherwise I may try the company in the regional contacts who's in Wokingham as that's pretty close.

Thanks again for all your advice, I'm feeling a little more at ease the more info I get.

I was just going to suggest them, John Safe says they are very good, and they were happy enough to give me free telephone help on an electrical problem.

It sounds suspiciously like a defective gauge or sender - there is simply no way the coolant could be at 90-odd degrees within 30 sec of the engine being started. Also the climate control change could be related electronically just as easily as it could be mechanically. I'd take it to a stealer, or at least a reputable indy who won't fleece you for a head gasket when it isn't.

I agree, maybe Im just getting cynical in my older age - or maybe Im just getting wiser to the scams some of these garages will pull.

You mentioned you havnt had the car long I seem to remember, if you got it from a BMW dealer they are who I would take it back to them, the simple reason being they wont want to tell you anything more than what is actualy wrong with the car having sold it to you so recently.

Hi Matt, back again.

Sorry, can't give you any more advise as already stated, except check and even have the small stuff done first - this may mean wasting some money if it is the H/G afterall but then again ...

Check / Do Thermostat
Check for faulty gauge or sensor

and yes, these engines married with fully synthetic oil will use oil, more so in the summer when temps are higher, just check it each month as I have to on my 530i.

P.S. had word with the guy I use and he said that basically it could be any number of things but always start with the small stuff first as already mentioned - he could not add to what has already been suggested without seeing the problem himself.
Your idea of going to more than one garage with the problem to see what variety of answers you get is a very good thing to do.

all the best

Kevin

Thanks you guys for all your help/advice.  I have spoken with the guys at Munich Motors in Wokingham and have decided to let them have a look at her.

I'll let you all know what the verdict is when I find out.

Thanks again.

MUNICH MOTORS IN WOKINGHAM RULE!!!

I am very pleased to announce that my overheating car is no longer overheating!

It turns out (for those of you interested) that what happened is:

The first component to fail was the AC fan, this then put extra strain on the Thermostat which failed and caused a problem with a sensor of some description.  The guys at Munich replaced the thermostat and sensor and all is good again.

Thanks again to Nigel & John Safe for recommending Munich !

All I need to do is replace the AC fan..... so anyone know where I can get one and how easy/difficult it is to replace it, don't know how long I can do without the AC..... especially if this weather holds out!!

Good to hear it wasn't eye wateringly expensive to fix - not many overheating problems end cheaply!

PM it to me if you wish

Do I get a prize for suggesting a temp sensor on page 1 and a thermostat at the top of this page?!  It doesn't have to be a big prize since I missed out on the ac fan!

Its nice to hear a happy outcome from a service and cost point of view.

Do I get a prize for suggesting both the  electric (A/C) fan and the thermostat at some point in this thread?

Excellent news, just shows you what a wonderfull place the BMW forum can be.

H/G - always did sound a bit dodgy without all the other symptons you should have got.

You could try the usual suspects:

Euro Car Parts
German and Swedish

But new A/C fan may be one of those parts they do not deal with, still worth checking.

Failing that try FAB BMW salvage in Gloucester - always advertising in BMW magazine.

All the above have websites

In the end you may just have to bite the bullet and get it from dealer.

Never tried replacing said fan but shouldn't be too difficult, in the end may be best letting Munich Motors do it for you.
