    Posted: 16-March-2005 at 08:53

Just spoke to a specialist who quoted me 315 quid for the insp1 which is a good price I think.

So I went on to say I'll be supplying my own oil and how much will it come down by?  They said they'll use my oil, no problem, but the price will come down by nothing "because the oil we supply is perfectly good and approved by BMW".

I don't think this is fair because they should reduce the standard bill by at least the cost price of their own oil if not the actual retail price, but what does the panel think?

That is a very poor attitude from a specialist.

As a customer it is your right to choose not only the oil but the specialist you use!! They should have more sense and realise this.

Being the pessimist that I am, having had that response, if I used them for the service I would have a niggle in the back of my mind as to whether they actually did use my oil in the job.

Who is the specialist?

Never mind fair, is it legal to charge you for something you've not had? Thats fraud in my book.  I'd vote with my feet there _Andy_.

This is like the good old screen-wash ripoff.  I've lost count how many times I've had a car serviced and they've drained my screenwash out and refilled it with theirs, and then charged me for it.

Even Porsche used to do it to me until I complained about it.

Depends if they list oil on the invoice... if it just says "Inspection I Service" and nothing more then it's probably not strictly fraud.

Agree about voting with your feet though, appaling attitude.

Steve.

I'd rather not say which specialist I'm talking about.  All I can say is they come highly recommended from this site and I'm disappointed.

I just called back to speak to the service manager to ask him the question, because I'd really like to use them.  I got the same female I spoke to yesterday who basically wouldn't let me speak with him!  And that's basically left too sour a taste, which is a shame.

According to the TIS, it's valve clearances, pollen filters, oil, filter, water and brake fluid if timed up (extra charge for each) and a hard stare.  It says brakes need to come off and be inspected, but I've just replaced all those so that's irrelevant too.

Any other specialists in the Surrey, Norwich, Wokingham area?

I have a fair idea who that is then! If it is who I think it is, they have lost me as a customer too.

The work was excellent, the attitude and businessmanship was apalling.

Any reports about Thope End Garage, Norwich?  They've been recommended by the guy behind the counter at GSF.  Apparently BMW specialists.

Hi,

There is a guy in Chipstead (nr Croydon) who is very well recommended and I have used him for the past 10 years, he is a proper specialist and works on his own, well known for his knowledge on the older BMs, does 2.7 conversions on E30s and S14 rebuilds no problem. His name is Les Stannard (01737555273) and I am sure you can supply your own oil for a service, be warned - he only takes cash / cheques but is excellent value for money. Oh you do need to book early as he is usually very busy. You get nothing fancy as he works from his own garage etc, what you do get is your car properly looked after.

Kev

I know Les and he is a very nice genuine bloke based over near Croydon. I would definately take my car to him, but he is too far from me and I have a superb specialist that I have been using for many years.

He does work from home though, but dont let that put you off.

Sounds like your specialist is a k*** if they dont reduce the price for using your oil. My chap charged my around £130 for inspection 2 labour on my E30 M3 where I supplied everything (LSD oil, gear oil, engine oil,fuel/oil filter, plugs,K&N etc).

I recently had an inspection 1 done at Munich Motors on my E30. I asked also if I could supply my own oil, they said yes but wouldn't knock anything off the price. They said the oil they used (Valvoline) was what they prefered to use and if I supplied my own oil there wouldn't be any comeback on their work. (this last bit may be a bit wrong on my behalf but it was something like that or warrentied, bit vague, but something (?)) I said fine use Valvoline, it's a good oil, Moseleys use it too.

Life's too short.

I can recommend MJF Engineering, Mark McLelan, 01306-713232

He was the first mechanic that Munich Legends started up with, he's based by Dorking.
He's done a couple of excellent jobs for me, and certainly knows M3's well enough. He uses Valvoline Fully Synth.
