I'm very curious what what those plugs looked like Mark. I agree with Dergside, sounds like fouled plugs.

We will find out later today :D
Gonna have them out and see whats what, im inclined to agree now btw, car stinks of fuel when ticking over, smells very rich, almost as if the plugs are not burning the fuel thats being sent, car is still completely standard atm with an original ECU and throttle body.
Im guessing that running my viper 2 chip ( which was programmed to support the big bore throttle body ) without the BBTB for the first day fouled the plugs - hence when I tried to figure out what was going wrong by replacing and switching parts around the damage/crud was already on the plugs ?
Anyways, will see later.

All the bits that say "split" have been replaced today :)
Sadly the plonka who fitted the last lot of plugs ( assuming they have been replaced LOL ) tightend them so tight it broke as I was extracting it, as a rule and from past experience your meant to only tighten plugs a little more than hand tight, ie a good nip......anyways around the rim of the base of the electrodes is carbon deposits, yet the electrodes look fairly clean if not very worn ( gaps look too big to me) im not experienced with this kind of plug so would appreciate thoughts on them , they appear to the NGK R1 BMW plugs ?? are these correct ? car is offroad now as I dont have a replacement plug and I dare not remove the rest until I get some replacements as a backup, this plug can from POT 1 btw.

Apart from the (oil?) on the ceramics, they appear to be a normal colour/burn to me..
Ive seen much worse keeping an engine running.......
Have you got the other 3 plugs out yet?

Nah, off to pick up some new plugs in a few mins just in case tho, if the other plugs are any different when I take those out ill post back - if this doesnt cure my problems then its time for the BMW diag I guess.
Cheers

Ok the plug that came from cylinder 6 was fouled, deposits of Carbon and unburnt fuel, replaced all plugs and took it for a run, still feels down on power to me even with new plugs in it, however the engine doesnt feel so lumpy now and has a smooth tickover - im pretty sure replacing the pipework etc will have been mainly to blame for that one tho.
Whilest replacing the engine cover I noticed a tiny amount of milk on the oil cap, hope this isnt the sign of things to come , possibly explain the power loss tho I guess, also the piston was at the top of the bore on #6, I could clearly see the top had a heavy deposit of Carbon build up on it, prolly looks worse than it is tho.
Readying myself for a headgasket job I guess ( comes with owning one of these cars I guess ).
Could anyone tell me roughly how big a job it would be to do the head gasket if its shot ??
Before I jump to conclusions im going to get the BMW DIAG done just in case, im hoping the Lamba Sensor is screwed or something similar.
No pic of the fouled plug im afraid as my old digi cam refused to focus to make it worthwile posting.

Took a drive down to see Jason ( guy who runs Chipped UK - sells the Viper chips ). He kindly offered to check out my car for me with Diag etc.
Only error on the whole care was the lamba sensor, gonna pick up a new one ASAP then take a trip back to the people who made my exhuast to get the job done properly, they only inserted the existing lamba into one of the pipes instead of the neck at the head of where the pipes split as per the original exhuast.
Anyways, well happy, well worth the trip, and just wanted to share with you guys what a decent and helpful chap Jason is, if your considering a Chip dont even think twice of going elsewhere, he was even going to make me a custom mapped chip if I needed it free of charge to replace the Viper2 I have fitted - where else can you get someone as genuine as that ???? Not to mention his chips are as cheap as "chips"

Mark, that plug looks ok. Not really fouled at all.
As for the milk on the oil cap, believe it or not, this is kind of common with the M50. Most M50's that come accross my way are the same. It's just condensation at the top of the motor. If you don't have anything in the oil itself your generally good to go. Short trips that don't allow the oil to warm up and stay warmed long will contribute to the condensation.
Hope this helps,
Jake

Mark, I'm suffering the same symptoms but on top of the lambda sensor, I've discovered a hole in the pipe in front of the cat!
Hopefully replacing these might restore power! Good luck with yours, hopefully the new sensor will sort it!
