Had the engine management reprogrammed with the latest software by main dealer approx 3 weeks ago the problem has not yet reoccurred it cost approx £60, however they didnt put the cover back on properly this would allow water in to the electronics, they also left off a hose support. so much for top quality service.
good luck

Might as well add my car to the list too, 1999 328i.
From memory it's done it since I bought it at 19,000, now on
86,000. Only cut out once though, and it's much worse when it's
cold, which tends to be the time you leave it ticking over most!

So if its left it doesnt cause a problem?
As I will probably gonna get it chipped and therefore remapped anyway in about 6 to 12 months

Just found this, am scared now....:

carson2246 01-25-2005, 02:09 PM The
cold idle on my 2000 328Ci, 68,000 miles, has always fluctuated during
cold idle once or twice. During the last two winters the problem
worsened to the point it stalled several times last winter. Today the
dealer diagnosted the problem as a sticking VANOS at the cost of $1400.
Immediately got a 25% discount as the original owner when I asked for
BMW help. Got another 25% when I had my warranty dealer find the
service ticket where I complained about the problem under warranty with
no fix. $700 for a major engine component at 68,000 miles is not a
quality product. Any other similar experiences?
markl53 01-25-2005, 03:44 PM Actually,
it seems like if they have a record of your complaint which they didn't
fix during the warranty period they should fix it now at no charge...if
it were me I might try arguing some more :yikes: .

have mine VANOS control unit (something like that) changed last year on
my 2000 323ci. Cost me around CAD$1000 parts and labour if I fix it in
the dealership. I asked my own mechanic and he said it is kind of a
normal problem since they use Aluminum and it will eventually worn out
after certain distance. How soon?? Depends on your driving style. I
suggest you change it asap cos it is the unit that control the position
of the camshaft.
shorinji 02-05-2005, 04:24 PM My
VANOS was changed two weeks ago by my dealer just a week after I bought
it. I had no idea how much this cost until reading the threads. My idle
dropped and then recovered. Once warm all was well.
I'm not sure if a CPO warranty would have covered it. I am glad that I
bought the 2000 328is in the Winter or would have been stuck with the
repair.

I would be more likely to fault that 15000 mile oil change interval.

But I have seen others that have fixed it by changing fuel, others that
have fixed it by clearing the air idle valve out, etc..... there seems
to be no definitive answer for it, or what it will do if left...

I already run on 98RON with very occasional squirts of Redex to give it
a bit of a clean. I'll see if the dealer will clean the idle
control valve when it's next in, but I can see them refusing.
