hi,i have recently bought a 633 csi, which seems to be a hallmark edition.when i bought it,the car had a severe paint defect.i work in a bodyshop so im about 2/3s through a bare metal respray.the car was repainted in the late 80s(in a different colour)and the original colour isnt that tasty!id just like to know if the car is rare or valuable enough to return it to its original colour.what is one in near condition 1 worth?i did put this in the coupe forum but maybe thats not the best place.thanks,patrick. p.s.does anyone know if all the engines were blueprinted?

The Hallmark is indeed collectable, but alas I don't have any idea of value. Perhaps Howard would know as I beleive he had an interest in one of them a while back.

I think Graham Lynch has an example.. so he may be a good source of info.

You say the old colour isn't that tasty.. 'Metallic Bronze' was one of my favorites!

Graham Lynch's TWR Hallmark is depicted here:

It has also been the subject of a detailed feature in a previous issue of "Total BMW" magazine.

As far as I am aware, the body colour shown here is pretty much identical to the original shade. There weren't that many Hallmarks in the first place, so another working example will always be welcome.

They are certainly rare. As to value, I would opine that this is a sentimental judgment. At the end of the day, it is an early E24 (based on an E12 floorpan), with all the potential rust problems designed in by Karman...

A genuine Hallmark is now very very rare. Based on the E12 rather than the E28, they rusted that bit faster and have been around for 25 years or so.

You say "seems to be a Hallmark" from what I can remember the differences were:-

Alpina alloys

Alpina front spoiler

Alpina or Momo (same thing) steering wheel with "H" monogram

Full leather interior (but not I don't think, the dash à la Highline)

Sterling silver front ashtray with "H" monogram

Hand painted coachlines with "Hallmark" monogram.

I think they were all automatic apart from one built for Derek Bell which was reputed to have a blueprinted engine as well.  They were designed as limited editions to shift the unsold stock as the 635 neared production.  They were a BMW GB limited edition, sold only in the UK with the conversion work being done by TWR. Original cost in 1978/9 about £20000!

Value now is very difficult - basically what someone will pay, but I think it's fair to say that a Hallmark will be worth more than a similar condition "standard" 633. So in good all round condition with all its bits about £5000 maybe? There was a bronze one in Glasgow in the mid to late eighties but I haven't seen it or any other in a very long time.

Here's one:-

Ivan, that is just so sad.  You and I both need to get out more. I suppose the weather is as good for a quick canter as it is for golf.  We must have been sitting composing those replies at exactly the same time.  Get a life man. Happy New Year.

Same car.  Better pictures.

I've already been out for a long hack this morning round Bricket Wood, Herts. Rory is tired, but contented. He's also left a deposit or two on the tarmac of Jordans Way, Bricket Wood, but I don't think anyone's going to go there just to pick up a sample for DNA purposes.....
