That's true, and some of the lesser Type R engines also have 100bhp/litre, and all use variable cam timing devices.

EDIT> Also, another contributing factor to Hondas power figures it the insane ceiling they put on the revs in their engines :)

Hi there all, I love this kind of banter and have 2 comments to make, comparing evolutions of M's to the devolution of the Golf GTi is VERY insulting and a misplaced comparison to the evolution of the M marque. The mk1 and 2 great, the mk3 GTi should have been badged 'LX' or something equally derogatry (Sp?). What a horrible mess of a description of a car, I mean 0-60 in OVER 10 secs!! GTi ... not.

So why are E30 M3's and E36 M3's so different to be not be comparable?, they have more in common than any other cars out there....based on a saloon car, and fitted with a tweaked engine nat asp, chassis / handling enhancements and rear wheel drive with no driver aids (bar some of the later e36 evo's). The E30 was not exactly a lightweight in its time, as the e36 is, it just grew a bit like every single car does when it evolves, but essentially the same DNA?

e30 m3 is sunstantially different in all depts, developed as a homologation special

e36 m3 just a different version of the e36, aimed primarily at hairdressers and dj's

racing pedigree as against teeth and knickers....

Developed as a homologation means not that much. It's just a way of funding a project, by building road and cost compromised versions of a race car.

Yes, the incentive is different, the E30 M3 road car was produced from required suspension pick up points and base engine, and its required form to fit in suitable tyres, but the E36 was a development of setting up the existing road car into a fast road car, so the final objective is the same. If we were all racing on tracks, the outcome of this argument would be different, but we are not, owners of both are just taking pride in enjoying ownership of a well set up road car, which is usable for track days out of the box.

Both projects were worked by the same engineering team, with the same goals. Fast road cars to deliver a useable high performance car. E36's were raced, I am sure there must have been some feedback into the design from there.

How 'fast' can you go sitting on the wrong side?
If there's a 'Shootout' between all 3 models,they
should be std cars..
I'm up for it!

And (with same driver, all standard cars) my guess would be E30 slowest, then E36, then E46 fastest.........

Haven driven both on the road I cannot see how a standard E30 would come close to an E36 EVO in most situations. in a 10/10ths trackday the E30 might have a handling edge ....
