Topic: 2.7 M20 - Total BMW mag Posted: 22-September-2004 at 14:00 |
Hi all!
Anyone got the October issue of Total BMW? If you
have read page 89 onwards. I like the sound of a 2.7
M20 rebuild. I know my M20 block has the dipstick in
the sump, but has anyone in the forum done this
mod? If so, what block/crank/piston/head
combination did you use? This could be my project
for early next year. Can someone point me in the
right direction?
Regards,
Shaun

I did it on my E34. Use Eta rods, crank and pistons. Get it mapped and you're away!

Hi Alpina 527. What block did you use? I have a 2 ltr
M20 block in my car. Do I look for a standard E34
2.5 ltr block or am I needing to be looking at
scrapped E28's for a block/crank/pistons/head?
Thanks,
Shaun

E34 525 block is fine, or get yours bored to 84mm. Give this man a ring. He is a real expert in 2.7 conversions. His name is Les Stannard. 01737555273. If you use your own block you can keep the original engine number (if you get my drift!)

Out of curiosity boring out a few mm on a 525 doesn't sound too bad but wouldnt boring out a fair chunk from a 520 cause adverse knock on effects with the cylinder head having a fair amount of the original metal taken out losing its strength after all this time or do they reline the head to strengthen it?
Its one thing that i have often wondered about with regards to older engines and rebores. Any clarification appreciated.

i have done this mod and have a proven 235hp without nitrous and around 400hp with full gas @90% @ 5600rpm

Hey 235 Bhp doesn't sound bad! So my next move is
finding an eta block to take the crank/ con rods and
pistons. Is this an E28 engine?
cheers,
Shaun

Still trying to source a suitable eta crank and pistons.
Anyone able to help me build a 2.7 monster?

Wow! I thought my present M20 block rebuild was
expensive at £1200 (last year). You obviously have
some motor there if it cost 5 grand! Were you able to
get a complete eta block to get the right parts (if so,
where???), ar did you buy a diesel crank and
specialist pistons? Cheers!

i used this spec.
320i block
karl schmidt pistons
corrillo rods
eta crank (knife edged)
arp bolts
tarmac spec head with alloy valve gear with o/s valves.
eta engines are around all the time for 50 quid.
