As long as the coolant has been changed regularly (using the BMW recommended coolant type) and the car hasn't been overheated you shouldn't have any problems with the headgasket on the M50/M50TU.

Hi Jon,

A code read on one of these will not show a cam sensor on its way out. Either the ECU can see the CAS signal or not. If the signal is missing or low, a code will be logged.

When they read the codes, if the vanos Solonoid was disconnected, that would have put a code up too.

I am pretty sure that the wrong cam cannot be fitted.

If the car ran ok before the head job, then the fault has to be related.

If the cam timing or the vanos set up has not been done correctly it could log a CAS code, and will run like c**p. This has to be disturbed during a head job.

Sounds to me like someone is taking the p*ss.

Get a second opinion from someone who comes reccomended.

Alan

the £356.57 was for everything, parts and labour. the man had his car towed in and drove it away, tested, repaired and fully serviced for that. i dont know how much other garages would charge, but there seems like there is a huge difference between what i have read on this forum and how much we charge.

Hi Alan,

It seems the wrong cam can be fitted if they rip out all of the vanos unit and basically leave a big hole there where there should be some bits.

Basically it is in a recommended garage (now) and they were a bit concerned as to what they saw / did not see fitted. The car had been stood far a few months when I bought it and it didnt run very well but I put this down to being a little sluggish due to standing (doh!). and thinking it needed a damn good service and TLC.

Cheers

Jon
